a good size. especially if their is a second game that comes afterwards.

EQ may be small, but each game is a section of the continent. Personally I think you should add each game like a puzzle to make the full map.
>>
>>387967349
Depends on what content it has. Botw i thought was just a little to big, while Xenoblade X i thought was huge but had alot to offer.
>>
It's not about the size but about the density of shit there is to do.
>>
>>387967349
Burnout Paraturd's map is NOT what retards make it to be.
It's way smaller.
>>
>>387967349
as big as it needs to be.
For example daggerfall map was way too big
>>
>>387967349
Big enough to where there's a balance between meaningful content (like towns, cities and dungeons) and filer space (vast, mostly empty forest, deserts etc.)
>>
>>387967349
Depends on how quick you travel and how you plan for the player to consume content.

Skyrim you move obnoxiously slow and you're supposed to travel to find content. You don't have to travel far but it still kind of sucks

BotW you move reasonably quickly, have many methods of travel and traveling is fun. The fun in the game comes from dicking around on the way to things because movement is fun and combat isn't a big investment of focus

GTA V is pretty much the same story as BotW. You can move incredibly quickly and have many fun movement options plus most of the fun comes from dicking around and causing mayhem on your way from A to B.

Didn't play much of W3, dropped it about 6 hours in because all you do is follow dotted lines on a horse and talk in an area that's dead fucking flat and uninteresting, never mind how disgustingly far away and boring everything is to get to.

There are better examples of non-dick around open worlds like deus ex mankind divided and arkham asylum since their layouts were small but packed with content and memorable and felt brimming with thought, focus, and care but I'm mainly addressing the 4 in pic.

Pretty much this. Also, certain style of games seem to have different sizes that suit them. GTAV's city size was fine, but the upper section could have probably stood to get cut in half. GTA Vice City and 3 used its size quite well. BotW was just the right size, except they neglected filling it with shit. Hopefully the Wii U was the limiting factor on that and they won't do it again.

Pretty much the same issue that I had with BotW, except it took longer to reach this problem. I stopped playing the game shortly after getting my doll. Hell, I went over the entire map at that point, and revisiting a spot you've already seen 1000 times isn't fun.

How can a city be made out of poetry? What would that even look like
>>
>>387967349

Map size has always been a gimmick. LOTRO has one of the largest mapped worlds of any game/MMO and it's mostly empty space.

I think about games like Oblivion which had (at the time) massive open worlds and not having known about quick travel, would be these long treks on foot that involved running into the same animals, occasionally finding a cave or shrine was a great example of discovery, but when I found out about fast travel I did it to every single location.

Empty space is fucking boring, I'd much rather have a city or hub of sorts that is packed with distractions or diversions than have to walk through wastelands.

It doesn't matter the actual size of the map but the density of the map's relevant features thereof. Just to use an example from your OP let's look at the HD Universe's Los Santos.
Technically it's a pretty big fucking map but think about where most of the action happens. There's very little in terms of missions, collectables, side characters, and other points of gameplay that you can find outside of the city proper. It can even be argued that the vast majority of the counties' surface area is just there to extend the playing area so you can fly planes in long straight lines without needing to turn around sooner.

in this sense skyrim is extremely well designed
they hide big distinct areas with small mountains and forests to stop you from seeing everything is close. the roads wind and fast travel means you never get a sense of scale
if you actually just walk over everything and take the highest route from one side of skyrim to the other it's not that big
it would seem even smaller if you could take a car on a road

And Witcher 3 has a 100% empty sea and nvisible walls everywhere.

"The smallest estimate, created by reddit user noob10, uses link's jogging speed and time estimates to place the world at around 8.3 square miles based on the speed of 30 minutes to run across the world, a much more conservative size. However noob10's calculations assume that Link's running speed is the same as the average human walk speed, while Link actually runs at something closer to a slow sprint.

The final estimate, which seems the most accurate, is based off several factors including Nintendo's official map scales and claims. This estimate lands somewhere in the middle, placing the size of the map at 61 square kilometers, or 23.5 square miles.

To put that in the perspective of #VideoGames, the world is indeed 1.5 times bigger than Skyrim and absolutely dwarfs previous entries into the series, but it isn't as big as some games. The Witcher 3 is still around twice as big, and GTA V beats it by about 20 square kilometers."

>GTA V is too small

I think it feels a lot smaller than it actually is because it's easy to travel across it very quickly.

The best thing about botw was that there weren't just fucking toys lying around everywhere like it was a four year old's bedroom. Everything had space to breathe and distances felt about right.
>>
It should take the Far Cry 2 approach.
Pretty big map, that is hard to navigate through, making it seem even bigger in retrospect.

Large enough to fill the map screen.

>>BOTW is too big
>Really? Why? I think they could have put more interesting things in it to find but overall I like the size of BotW's world. The landscape being very varied and fun to traverse helps.
It's too big compared to its content. You don't really need to explore to clear the main quests and once you're done, the exploration is shitty because 95% of the map is empty and the remaining 5% is filled with stuff you already experienced 20 times. You'll only find the same 5 ennemies and one sanctuary or korok every once in a while. For its size, it'd need WAY more variety. Like 6-7 more villages with their own identity, 20 new ennemies, way more travellers and npc doing random stuff in the wild and a real way to locate koroks.

My issue with it is that it's small and "simple" enough that you remember pretty much everything after a few hours only. In a game where the environment plays such a big part, it's very important that the players keep discovering things for a very long time. Once you know exactly which way you should go during a chase or the respawn point for your favorite car, most of the interest is gone already.

BoTW is pretty good proof that having a big map is pretty pointless if it's just empty.

Not an arguement

There was nothing of any relevance going on there until recently.
The player character just goes wherever the horde and alliance are focusing all of their troops at the time whenever a new ancient evil awakens.

Is it true that Witcher 3 has zones rather than allowing you to fully explore the map without breaking it up?

I would like to see an RPG so big that you wouldn't be able to explore it all in one playthrough. Something like 1000 Morrowind's combined if that makes sense with in universe/lore fast travel means rather than just giving it to the player.

this would just result in procedural generated shit or huge amounts of copy pasted areas

This anon has the right idea.

Filler may be nice, but it's only that. A game focused on the environments the player with interact with is a well planned game
