Tails Adventure is a comfy 8-bit game while the Sonic games are trying too hard to be fast 16-bit platformers but they're just too limited.

I still have my childhood Game Gear. It turns on but doesn't read any carts, don't know why.
Regarding games, all of the good Game Gear exclusive games have SMS conversions available which greatly increase resolution. Also, you can play them all on a Genesis with the Power Base Converter or a flash cart. Obviously any games that took advantage of GG's insane 4096 color palette may suffer as a result of the conversion, but there aren't many (or possibly any) games that took full advantage of that.

I got this on the 3DS out of curiosity and was pretty surprised. I heard the other Tails game was shit though.

I spent more time playing Tails Adventure on Sonic Adventure DX then the rest of the game. It's a fun little title.

Tails Skypatrol is... well.. it's not a bad game per se, but its a pretty mediocre shump. It was also only released in Japan so I never played it as a kid and have no attachment to it.

What's your thoughts on the 2nd game, the only game I've played of Sonic and the one I still own on cartridge.

I dislike how limited your view is and how difficult it gets in some places, I also dislike trying to get emeralds for all the acts, some of them are a pain in the ass.

Sonic 2 on Game Gear is essentially a Master System game with the field of view cut in half. If you play the Master System version its like a whole new experience.
Chaos and Triple Trouble did a much better job handling the limited resolution of the Game Gear since those were developed with the GG in mind.

That's odd of true, because Sonic's sprite is fuckhuge in the GG version because it isn't scaled down at all, it's as if they started with Master System in mind and moved to GG partway through.

Yeah, I mentioned that over in >>387966775 but my point still stands, traditional Sonic platforming doesn't translate as well to 8 bit, portable or not. Triple Trouble does a good job owning up to that and it ends up being a competent game as a result, but its clear that it's fighting the limitations of the system.

This guy knows. 1 & 2 were too herky-jerky, something about the movement and the speed at which the games were running always felt off. Chaos deals with this really fucking well, movement is good.

Too bad the levels are unremarkable and the music was kinda pish.

That or Drift 2. Really good for an 8bit kart racer.
