Being a "Lightning" doesn't necessarily mean negative reputation only.
It just means a character that a developer likely has a personal attachment to, thus are put in more media than is deserved, and play a larger, more important role than necessary.
Like for example, Atlus has a BAD habit of putting a character like that in every remake they have. Like Aigis/Metis for P3, and Marie for Persona 4, she even got put into P4AU for some reason. And apprently there's gonna be one in the SMT Strange Journey remake too.

Another issue is that, while Liara did get character development, it happened off-screen if you didn't buy the DLC and she then refuses to talk about it, which does come off as a middle finger to the player. I like the idea of a more hard Liara. I do not like the idea of the naive scientist becoming a super powerful information broker.
