Are the Quake games worth playing today?

As someone who started playing through the Quake games for the first time this year. Yes.

Currently on Quake 2: The Reckoning.

I still have to go back and play Arkane Dimensions for Quake 1 though. I heard it was great so I am saving it for last. Took me a while to finish all the other Quake 1 mods I got recced though.

I have to say though, despite Quake 1 being unique with it's lovecraftian like setting, I think I enjoy Quake 2's setting a bit more. Why did people like Quake 2 less?

So far the best parts I've played has been Quake: Scourge of Armagon. But Quake 2: The Reckoning is really cool too, I love the Gecks and their caved and underwater passages. Dissolution of Eternity was great as well as the mod Travail.

original quake SP is very atmospheric, a little boring at times but decent gunplay. make sure you get the trent reznor soundtrack installed. the MP is basically ultra quakelords who will kick your ass so i wouldn't see a point in a noob trying it, you'd probably have a better time playing in the newschool doom2 scene

How does Quake Live compare to Quake III Arena?

in quakeworld you only use the RL and lightning gun pretty much, that much is true, but at least the rest of the guns don't feel as anemic as the Q2 ones

I had way more fun in Quake 1 than 2. Single player only.
