Either way, Melee survived for over a decade without EVO and there are still other majors that are better suited for the game. The game is going to die off eventually anyway, but not being at EVO isn't vital.

This has never happened. I love Melee, but SF has always been at the top of popularity. Viewership or entrants.
If you're referring to Twitch viewership being lower than Melee(which I'm not sure was the case) it would mainly be due to the game being broadcasted on ESPN. When taking those numbers into account, SFV absolutely shits on all other games at EVO, Melee included.
Though, for a 16 year old party bash 'n' smash game with no support from its developer, it's pretty impressive.

I love melee so much but the 'new' generation of players suck. They want to change the controller and how it works when its been fine for 16 years, and instead of the Back room the 'council' that votes on the ruleset is just 5 commentators who suck at the game

Melee is dying. It might not be sudden but there has been a strong decline in the competitive aspect of the game. You can't keep trying to sustain a community on spectators alone, but Melee has bought into this idea and wants to shoehorn in storylines and drama with their top players, so much to the point of saturation. It cannot sustain itself only on manufactured hype and fanboys, and the turnout for actual players will become less and less as time goes on. They already know that trying to compete in a game that is pretty much solved is near pointless, and as the community only caters to the top players, others will feel insignificant and stop showing up to tournaments.

It's not really new at all. It's existed for decades now. It was new in 1999 and there really weren't any other games in the sub-genre up until Sony tried to make their own Smash game.
Nowadays, there are a decent amount of platform fighters like Rivals of Aether and Brawlout. The new Icons game is being developed by some of the Project M guys and the Melee influence really shows. It's definitely its own established sub-genre at this point, even if most games in it haven't been able to reach the same popularity as Melee for various reasons.

The default design for Melee is a four player free-for-all with variable levels and random items.
Picking Final Destination, turning off items and only playing 1v1 does not change this fact. If you need to ban and disable a vast majority of the game to "make" it into something else, it is not that thing.
Street Fighter Alpha's "Dynamic Battle" doesn't make it a coop party game. The game is not designed nor balanced around that kind of mode.

You'd have to mod a hell of a lot more of the game to make Melee a viable fighting game, like the days of shooters around the turn of the century almost always using mods that alter the game pretty significantly for the sake of balance in player-organized tournaments. Project M got shut down and they went on to make that Icons thing, right? That would be closer to a fighting game with care taken to make the controlled 1v1 environment actually engaging.

Thing is, Smash 4 is much better designed when it comes to 1v1 fights, with deliberate controlled environment stages that let players focus on character mechanics and far more care taken when it comes to character balance and viability on level ground (often to the detriment of many characters when playing on any other map with slopes and varied terrain). Smash4 has been specifically designed to cater to such a style of play and one of its two core versus modes is much closer to a "Fighting Game".

Smash4 is a fighting game. Melee is not.

Out of all those games, only Rivals of Aether looks interesting, but the roster is extremely limited and there are some weird recovery mechanics. A lot of people got this wrong. They've clearly said that they considered removing combos, because they thought it would be unfair if you could hit a player mutliple times in a row like that. But, they left it in because it was clearly a lot of fun.
What happened with wavedashing was similar. It's plain and simply momentum from an air dodge carrying over on the ground, causing characters to slide depending on their friction. That's it. There is nothing glitchy about this. There was really nothing to consider here.

People hated Street Fighter 4 at first, and screamed bloody murder when Third Strike was yanked from EVO. But by the time USF4 rolled around, people loved 4, and 3S wasn't forgotten as it still got side tourny play, but it wasn't a main stage contender.

And it would be horrible for the scene to stagnate on old games. S3's parry mechanic and slanted balance would hurt it in the long-run. Melee is exactly the same way. It's a dead game, as dead as it can be. Just look at the top 8 every year; it's the same fuckers doing the same thing. The level of mastery for the autistic few who never quit is too high. It won't receive balance updates. The ONLY reason, the literal ONLY reason Melee still pulls viewers is nostalgia and the fact it is leveraging the entirety of Nintendo's fanbase like a hammer in terms of popularity.
