But seriously, how can others jrpg even compete?
>>387929552
Romancing SaGa 2 and Seiken Densetsu 3 are obviously better
>>387929552
Terranigma can, though this and Chrono Trigger aren't really comparable.
>>387929552
Like this
>>387929552
Chrono, Frog, and Robo best combo
Ayla, Frog, and Robo are best when Chrono dies.
>Give all magic tabs to Robo
>at the end game Heal Beam heals 400hp to all characters
Is this the most broken skill in the game?
And why is Robo even the best healer, wasn't that supposed to be Marle? Yet she's the only healer without a multiple character skill what a useless cunt

Anon, that's a visual novel.
>>387930354
the cutscenes can last for hours, I'll give you that, but goddamn the combat system is so good.
>>387930864
>the cutscenes can last for hours, I'll give you that
Are they at least interesting? If so I don't mind
It's been on my backlog for years
>>387931116
The story is your archetypal JRPG "kill god" story, but there's a hell of a lot more depth and world building than your standard JRPG. I can't really say all that much about it because I'm only a third of the way through it right now but from what I played it's awesome, the translation is well done too.
>>387929552
By being better. I love me some CT but it's not even in the top 10 jrpgs on SNES/SFC.
>>387933118
could you list some that are better?
>>387933821
Romancing SaGa 2
Romancing SaGa 3
Seiken Densetsu 3
Terranigma
Metal Max Returns
Lufia II
Breath of Fire II
Dragon Quest V
Final Fantasy V
Final Fantasy VI
Probably what I'd rank as the top 10 without getting into srpgs. CT would probably come in right after those at 11. But I can understand people putting it over some of those.
>>387933821
Persona 5, Persona 3, Final Fantasy 8
Just from the top of my head
>>387934343
I loved playing those on Super Nintendo.
>>387934316
FFVI is the only game that even comes close. You can't actually be retarded enough to think that Lufia 2 is anywhere near as good as CT.
>All these trash opinions
I never thought I would be surrounded by this many people with shit taste.
>>387931575
>I'm only a third of the way through
>he doesn't know
>>387929552
Barring IV Final Fantasy games have better character customization, Dragon Quest games capture the joy of exploration better. Mario RPGs give you active commands that make every battle engaging.
Chrono Trigger is what happens when you make babby's first JRPG Kino as fuck, but plenty of series and games do certain things better than it.
I CHOOSE YOU
>>387934629
What's your enlightened opinion?
>>387934979
>when you make babby's first JRPG Kino as fuck
What the hell does this even mean
>>387934343
>Final Fantasy 8
Sorry but any RPG with enemy scaling is objectively garbage.
>>387933821
>>387934316
Bahalag is incredible and more people need to play it.

Please upload a video and make a thread of your reaction when you find out why these two statements are hilarious and why the other guy posted a picture of disc 2 with his comment.
>>387929552
they can compete because as good as Chrono Trigger was the game was still very short and greatly lacking in content
>>387935191
He obviously has none. Too pussy to post it even if he does has one.
>>387935367
Meant for this
>>387935148
>>387935241
Just say Bahamut Lagoon dude, no one cares that you know the nippy bing bong nickname.
Grandia series was pretty good
The only good thing about CT's gameplay is the group techs
Gameplay is most definitely not the reason why this game became so popular
>>387935335
It's more that JRPGs that came later are disgusting, bloated messes that make a game with as many endings as Chrono Trigger look "short" and "lacking in content".
>>387934979
>Dragon Quest games capture the joy of exploration better
I recently played V and I can't express how much I love it. Arriving for the first in Faerie Lea is just so cute, it made me fell in love with the game
>>387935614
>I prefer random encounters, which is why I'm so popular in the San Francisco public restrooms
>>387935557
I'll bing bong you.
Now go play it.
>>387935881
Dudes are about to get bingbonged.
>>387929552
considering CT is carried solely on its artstyle and music, not very hard to compete with it
>>387935191
Being made by the guys behind FF and DQ it takes a lot of elements from both and simplifies them in a way which lowers the bar for entry. It's impossible to make poor character building and party choices in the game. Even with the time zones the world is small and it's hard to get lost. Dungeons are fairly simple straight-shots to the boss. But at the same time the aesthetics behind the game are incredibly strong. The look and feel is polished to a shine.
You see that a lot. The games that lowers the barrier for entry in a genre and does it with the most production values tend to become the ones that people talk about the most, over time.
>>387935614
>group techs
Breath of Fire IV, Mario and Luigi RPG, Valkyrie Profile, and more recently Monster Hunter Stories all handle this mechanic better than Chrono Trigger has. What exactly is special about it?
>>387935881
I have, thought that was implied. It's good but Der Langrisser is still my favorite SNES jap strategy game.
I suggest you check out:
Energy Breaker
Treasure Hunter G
Ball Bullet Gun
Monstania
>>387936824
I just love Bahamut Lagoon so much though.
It's got a bunch of great characters, incredible gameplay that mixes in Fire Emblem with Final Fantasy like 4 man teams and the dragon leaders - it just works so well.
Also NTR
>>387936978
>Also NTRPicked the fuck up
>>387937307
It's really good too.By the time you rescue the princess she's got Stockholm syndrome and fallen for her captor.
He joins your team with her after you save her and she never loves the protagonist again.

quick question, do Persona 5 fans actually play other megaTen games or even other RPGs? I recently finished it and I have no idea why it is being praised as "one of the greatest RPGs"
>>387937629
>I recently finished it and I have no idea why it is being praised as "one of the greatest RPGs"
Really?
No idea?
I understand what you're saying to some degree. I enjoyed it but it was far from specialsame way I feel about Zelda.
That said I can completely understand why it's captured the modern audience. It's got great audiovisual presentation and it goes in deeper than most other mainstream RPGs have in years.
>be me
>shithead kid who thought anime was for losers
>be a loser too, but i digress
>think jrpgs are dumb, never play them
>be a few years ago
>people online won't shut up about chrono trigger
>wtf, why not
>this is good
This game literally sold me on JRPGs. I know writing off a whole genre was dumb. Trying to catch up.
Suggestions of classic JRPGs that are especially good for newbies?
>>387937440
>>387937818
Lunar 1-2
Grandia 1-2
>>387935614
>Gameplay is most definitely not the reason why this game became so popular
You're very wrong. The no random encounters AND not having a separate battle screen go a long way into making the game enjoyable. Ripping the player from the world every time they have an encounter is not a good way to present your world. Especially when that random encounter screen has a very generic background that might not even match the area you were walking through. It was fine back with Dragon Warrior and FF1 when things were limited and conventions had not refined to have it that way.
Think about when you fight Magus the first time and youre walking down the candle lit path to him, the candles light all the way around Magus, and you fight him then and there on the screen. It would have lost a lot of impact if you then just went to yet another generic encounter screen with a stock castle backdrop.
Chrono Trigger isn't even better than Suikoden 1
>>387929552
Shin Megami Tensei was better than this desu
ATB sucks, so that's a major point against it
>>387935820
im playing this one too but dragon quest 6 have a more interesting story in my opinion, doesnt have those "cute" or dramatic epic moments, but the story is more complex, the world is bigger and there is a class system
>>387935335
That's one of the greatest points in it's favor. It's really well paced and doesn't just have content for the sake of padding.
>>387938521
This.
Don't mind me, best JRPG coming through.
>>387938357
It really wouldn't have, it's no where near even remotely a big deal.
