It's probably my favourite game but not even Jake Solomon denies it's poorly optimized and very weirdly programed.

Played the first one. For some reason the aliens were scoring insane hits from miles away while my pricks couldn't hit shit and were getting 40% accuracy at best even when in good positions.

Don't play it without mods. You want ones that speed up animations and remove unnecessary breaks so you can actually play this at a decent pace. Then you also want UI mods because the default UI is total garbage, starting with the HP bars and ending at the awful sub-screen management shenanigans you need to engage in when you want to check abilities and stats of soldiers, not even mentioning the horrid base management UI.
Once you fixed those issues with mods you will quickly realize that the game is very simple and lacks in content. As such you'll want to install mods like Long War 2 but it isn't beginner friendly, hence not being able to start the game for the first time with it.
I don't have high hopes for the expansion as it merely adds imbalanced new content and makes the awful UI even less useful but at least they release anything new. Speaking of new - if you encounter performance issues or bugs, expect them to remain around forever. In the year the game is out it only received 4 updates - which coincide with DLC releases.

Also, I always see people complaining about the plot in these games, from UFO Defense up to WotC. Who even fucking cares? Any semblance of a plot in the games is only there to kinda point at which point in the campaign you are.

I don't know if there's a mod that makes the overworld good but if there is I'm interested. Long War 2 is a wrong answer.
