As Noctis was confirmed to be showing up, with Ardyn Izunia very likely to be his villain counterpart. It also have three newcomers alongside Noctis who are already in the game. Y'shtola from XIV, Ramz from Tactics, and Ace from Type-0.

Compilation retconned it so that Sephiroth wasn't the only monstrous SOLDIER 1st Class former hero turned villain, there were actually three. Angeal, Zack's mentor who is irrelevant, Sephiroth, and Gackt (Genesis) who was a special snowflake just like Sephiroth with super powers. Genesis was responsible for everything that ever happened in all of FF7 and stuff. Also Loveless isn't just a play, it's actually also a book written about some ancient goddess that gives Genesis his power or something.

I seriously don't get why people would want Zack popularity aside. Even stretching the devs creativity and giving him a different moveset from Cloud (wich would not be easy in itself), FFVII already has 3 characters representing it (yes, Tifa hasn't returned yet, but face it, she's around the corner): give space to characters from chapter who have 2 or 1 characters, like VI, IX or XIV.
A good compromise would be having Zack as a skin costume for Cloud with voice change a la Injustice. You get the character, the devs don't have to squeeze for a moveset, and it doesn't wastes a slot.

That's because they weren't supposed to. Dodge cancelling allows for characters to get them with another hit on their last frame of recovery, basically a 1framer and a bug, SE never intended for this. They were all over OG Dissidia, Duodecim supposedly got rid of them but they're still there, harder than before and only possible but certain characters with certain conditions.

It was horrible, Crisis Core was an irredeemable piece of shit because of it with the only good parts being the fight with Sephiroth and Zack's final stand (coincidentally the only things that have nothing to do with Genesis or Angeal for the entire game). The devs confimerd with a teaser that Cloud of Darkness, Golbez and Ultimecia are also coming back before the console release.
This supposedly leaves out Gilgamesh, Tifa, Laguna, Yuna, Prishe and Gabranth out of the veterans (i'm not counting Desperado/Feral Chaos, at least not for now).
We know there's a season pass for at least 6 characters, but Square hasn't said anything more. For all we know the first couple of characters will be free updates centered around the veterans and then there will be paid DLC.
