Thinking of getting some more vidya, but can't decide between Switch/PS4 (maybe both), or upgrading my PC so I can play current gen games on high (@1080p 60fps), the problem isn't money, it's that I can't think of enough games for either platform that I really want to play. My taste in games is quite specific and unfortunately the sort of games I like aren't common: platformers, arcade racers, certain puzzle and adventure games as well are what I prefer. also I have a wii u and botw etc. already

Pic unrelated.

PC.
It literally has access to 99.9% of ALL games ever created, and even many console-game publishers are now releasing their shit on PC as well, like Square's been doing with their FF series.

Not to mention the huge benefit of emulation, mods, and free online.

I do already have a PC, it's just in desparate need of an upgrade in order to play anything current gen so I rarely get games for it (mostly just use it for emulation). I've played on a PS4 before, but I didn't find the library to my taste (although I can't say I tried every game).
So what specific games would you recommend?

OP here, if I upgrade my PC I'd get a moderate GPU as an upgrade (1060 6gb most likely) and a new monitor since this one is nearly a decade old. My CPU is meh, an i5 6400; my current GPU is old trash though, literally anything would be an upgrade from that. However, I'm really struggling to think of games I'd play given that I can't stand shooters, RTS, or most action-oriented games and these are popular genres particularly on PC.

>My CPU is meh, an i5 6400;
No it's not. I'm still rocking a non-K i5 2500, and it works wonders even today. People are still hoarding the 2500K and 2600K CPUs because of how cheap and powerful they are.

I literally got a GTX1060 6GB yesterday, upgrading from my 2011's GTX 560ti 1GB. The old warhorse served me damn well to this very day, still being able to 1080p/60fps huge majority of the games, some more demanding AAA blockbuster titles (ie RE7 and TW3) with handful of more extreme settings disabled, or on Low.

I was on the edge about getting the cheaper 1050ti 4GB, which already would've been a huge leap forward in my case and run most titles at 1080p/60fps all-High or even Ultra.
>>
>>387908334
What about the games?
You mentioned witcher 3 and re7, neither are games I'm interested in (although I'd give tw3 a try). Maybe you'll think I'm just being picky, but I can tell when I won't like a game; one of the only games I can think of that I'd probably enjoy on PC is planet coaster (even though I've heard mixed opinions on it), oh and rocket league but that's multiplat anyway.

I can recommend The Talos Principle and Resident Evil Remake, right off the bat. Neither requires a super beefy PC exactly, but they can be damn gorgeous on a strong machine.

I mentioned in the first post, to be more specific though some of my favorites include psychonauts, xenoblade, ratchet & clank trilogy (before it lost its charm), burnout, etc.. Certain genres I simply can't stand (shooters, especially FPS; RTS; anything turn-based) with very rare exceptions to the rule - one FPS I actually really liked was timesplitters, for example.

So you are mostly into now-oldschool 3D console games, belonging to genres seldom seen even on consoles these days?

Yeah, you do want a PC then.
Not only for emulating everything up to WiiU smoothly at 4K + 60fps (if you want), but also for tons of cheap and free indie / mod / AA games. We just got that Yooka-Laylee (or something) recently, which is a literal Banjo-Kazooie clone. Psychonauts is on PC as well, and the sequel's coming out "soon". There's also plenty of non-shooter first-person games, plenty of third-person shooters, numerous puzzlers, and tons of other niche or old-school shit that you don't quite see on consoles these days.

>TimeSplitters
I assume you've already played Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark too?
If not, there's a 60fps+Mouse Aiming "version" of PD made using N64 emulator of some sort, which might catch your interest.
>>
>>387911226
I gotta be honest I was hoping for recommendations for recent releases as well, since I've played a lot of the older stuff that interests me already, which is why I made this thread in the first place really. Also, I have played Goldeneye and Perfect Dark 64 before, many times. As for Yooka-Laylee, I was interested in it up until it released with a bunch of problems, I think it got patched since but I've lost interest in the game since; and Psychonauts I've already played twice - first on OG Xbox, then later on PC.

The problem with your so far presented genres and game-examples is that no matter the platfrom, such games have literally not been made in the past 15 or so years anymore. Huge majority of the best-selling shit nowadays is ye typical FPS or strategy game; platformers are practically dead, unless you play exclusively on Nintendo's consoles and are fine with some horribly blatant rehashing.

There'd be lots of games of various genres on PC, that are so drastically different from the modern console-game standards and design choices, that you could almost consider them their own sub-genres these days. Things like STALKER may seem like yet another Fallout3 or FarCry clone nowadays, but that'd be quite horrible way to describe them. Or how about those few modern, classic-style dungeon crawlers, like the Legend Of Grimrock 1 & 2?

What comes to 3D platformers, I think the long-waited "A Hat In Time" is still being worked on. You can also already emulate Zelda:BotW smoothly on decent PCs now.
>>
>>387912573
Hmm, traditional dungeon crawlers might be a good idea, although it's both a niche and saturated area so I'm not sure where to look for recommendations on those.
I really wish shooters and strategy games weren't so common as they're really not my thing - whilst platformers have been nearly dead this past decade. I don't even get why people play shooters on a console as well, it feels like ass to me.
>You can also already emulate Zelda:BotW smoothly on decent PCs now.
Already played it; loved it. Wish there was more like it, maybe I should finally try Morrowind even though I hate TES' combat style.
>>
>>387913292
>traditional dungeon crawlers might be a good idea, although it's both a niche and saturated area so I'm not sure where to look for recommendations on those.
the LoG1 and 2 were very well received and came out just couple years ago, so might try checking them out. They can prolly be acquired for mere McMeal prices nowadays.

>I don't even get why people play shooters on a console as well, it feels like ass to me.
At this point it's just a learned habit and mass-marketing biting their target customers. There's a reason why the term "console game" is so often used as a negative adjective when describing some shitty modern games; their heavily streamlined, even purely casualized designs have started to seep into too many other games on other platforms too.

By the way, what's your take on horror games?
That's one quite varied and still fairly strong-going genre with tons of games available on PC. Some even as exclusives. Besides the consoles-originating classics, like Silent Hills and Resident Evil Remake, there's also the PC-only Penumbra -trilogy and a handful of great, big mods for HL1 and 2.

>By the way, what's your take on horror games?
Played very little of them, it takes a lot to spook or creep me out so I figure that I'd find a lot of them dull. I personally prefer to play games that have interesting, fun, or otherwise unique mechanics and horror games don't tend to have much interaction in favor of a focus on narrative and atmosphere. I have played RE4 and RE1 a long time ago, though. Didn't really "wow" me.

>I have played RE4 and RE1 a long time ago, though. Didn't really "wow" me.
While not catastrophic, that really ain't exactly too smart nor wide way of experimenting with the genre. RE1 is like the most oldschool of oldschool "survival-horror" genre, while RE4 turned the series into third person shooter.

If you ever get a knack for what's practically an atmospheric, horror-flavored adventure game, do try out the REmake HD. Many people consider it to be a total 10/10 representative of its genre, and I can sign that statement too. The whole game is like a slowly unraveling 3D puzzle of sorts, that can be made easier or more miserable depending on your actions.
Silent Hills (1-4) on the other hand are THE go-to games if you want survival-horror titles with way more psychological scares, chilling atmosphere, and actually damn good, mature and deep stories. Not to mention totally killer soundtracks. Gameplay-wise, they're practically "just" RE-clones, but the style and execution of everything is totally from different planet.

np mate. Personally I've been a big survival-horror fan ever since getting to play RE1 back on PS1 days, and SH is the gigantic cult-hit series for revolutionizing the genre and even storytelling in gaming. SH2 is often brought up when talking about games that deserve to be called "art", and for good reason. I still prefer SH1 over it.

Unfortunatelly, thanks to Konami's big "FUCK YOU, THAT's WHY!" practices in past 10 years, the OG SH games are technically impossible to purchase these days. That's why the fans have been busy sharing the games' DL links and fancy new fan-patches for the past few years. Here's the SH PC Guide and said links:

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.
If SH3 runs like shit even on a strong PC, check and lower the Rendering Resolution setting.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide.

Based.
I'll give these a try later tonight.
As for modern games, I think I'll upgrade my PC by a mild amount (might even just settle with a 1050ti since even a 1060 would be a bit overkill for my needs), and perhaps get both a PS4 and Switch so long as I can find at least 5 games I'd like for both (will probably hold off on the Switch for a little while longer).

Attaboy.
I would recommend taking these games slowly. Rushing and spoiling the experiences by staring guides and stuff would be very counter-intuitive.

As some general protips, I'd recommend playing especially SH games in release order, and never play below Normal difficulties. Replaying each one of them is also very recommended, and there's a ton of replay value to be found in them, in many forms and sizes.
Adjust down the in-game Brightness setting, crank up the volume, and let yourself get immersed in the atmosphere. Don't try to kill everything that moves, especially outdoors.
Sometimes, turning OFF the flashlight can be more useful than you'd imagine.

That guy was really helping you I hope you know, the main point he was making is that consoles LITERALLY have no games these days. I fucking love video games but I have comfortably skipped this entire console generation save for playing Gravity Rush 2 and BOTW on consoles, and BOTW is something I'll be able to emulate once I upgrade my ancient CPU. Literally 99% of games released this gen are playable on PC, whether you're emulating the Wii U or just relying on multiplatform or ported games.

It's just not worth the investment for a console, there's basically nothing exclusive to play on them.
