They had Dimps originally make a simple mobile game with 4 zones using their old engine they've used for Sonic Rush & etc. but then Sega told them to port it to consoles & change the name to Sonic 4 Episode 1 to garner hype for the game to make easy cash. They even went the Episodic route so there would little risk in wasting money when it comes to making the games.

Why is it so hard to make a good Sonic game?
Clearly it's an iconic video game character, but there's no love behind it. Like it's just a child to divorcees who have moved on and it's just being juggled around like it's more of a burden than anything.

Because the entire premise of Sonic going fast is not conducive to a well thought-out game.
Sonic was thought up by managers and marketers in a Sega boardroom to try and compete with Mario. No one thought "will speed work in a platformer?", they were just trying to one-up Mario.

It's not that it's hard, it's just that Sega have always been treating it strictly as business and not as a passion in any shape or form.
The only reason Sonic took off back then was because it had talented developers behind it, and partially due to the nature and design of the games and the main character.

Now the only way they're staying afloat is by appealing to nostalgia and making good business decisions, but with mediocre developers and very tight deadlines, because money is the main driving factor.
It's a shallow line of reasoning, but that's the reality of it.

There are more good sonic games than bad sonic games.
Sonic has been doing fine after 06. I know Boom was terrible but I don't hold that against sega/sonic team's efforts since they didn't make that one.

I don't know how true is that. I don't remember the Rush games playing exactly like Sonic "4". Also, I just finished Sonic Colors DS, which is basically a Rush game, and it controls leagues better than "4", with more momentum, fluid platforming and everything. Weird, since they came out at around the same time.

It's probably not the exact same but a modified/updated version of it, it's probably as different it is since it got rid of the boost part of the gameplay & swapped it out for the homing attack.

Probably. Sonic Colors DS also has the homming attack with the targeting icon and everything.

Funny how playing that game without the boost still feels closer to a classic Sonic game than 4.

Sonic was made by a team of developers who like video games and wanted to make a game that appealed to an audience that hardly had enough games made from them, Sonic the character is for going fast, Sonic the game is about using momentum to platform
