Aren't you just focusing on triple A games with your response then? Top games in 2007 were way more niche to society than the top games of today. In 1997 the top selling games would most likely be extremely popular today, but not be able to hit the audience that publishers are trying to get today. There are people that buy consoles to play one or two games with their friends, and then there are people like us who browse /v/. The popularity of the former group allows us to appreciate very specific types of games on various platforms, but if we don't actively look for it then it just seems like a pointless waste of time.

I'd say the game is only enjoyable in ironman mode. The fun aspect comes in the long run, and pushing forward no matter how bad you are doing.

Combat itself is nothing new, but having to endure a fight with a piece of shit soldiers until your trainees are ready, or winning after losing 3 guys to a single new enemy you had never seen makes for interesting and tight situations.

Planning your bloodlines in order to get new classes and findind the balance between using your best soldier to fight or to try others just adds more stuff to the pile of things that could go wrong.

If you savescum it will get boring really fast. Go with the flow.

I finally decided to play silent hill 2 and 3 last week after putting it off for a damn long time. I enjoyed both of those games more than any modern game ive played in the last 5 years. Can't call that nostalgia either, games were just better. There's been a lot of innovation outside of the Western AAA single-player space. As you said indies are doing well, Japanese games are doing amazingly, and Western mutliplayer games are thriving. Even the aforementioned Western AAA singleplauyer space has been doing better with devs mining older IPs like D44M, Wolfenstein, and Prey.

A lot of the "video games are bad now :'(" crowd seems to be more concerned with being upset over the popularity of certain games instead of actually playing the actually good mid-tier and niche games.
