I personally love the sandshrew line but diglett is better. Its very fast, can hit hard and actually learns ground moves through lvl-up. Only thing it cant do is take a hit but sandshrew isnt a great tank anyways, better off getting a rock type if you need a physical tank.

Sandshrew looks great, diglett looks awful. That's what really matters.

As for which is "better" it probably depends on the game. In blue version, Diglett's very fast (if I remember correctly sandslash is just short of guaranteeing crits with slash) and you won't have to waste your dig TM so he'd probably be more useful (better yet, use neither and feed exp to nidoking).

If were talking gen 1 diglett by far. Dugtrio is fast as fuck and has guaranteed crits off of slash and a very high crit ratio on earthquake. Sandslash has next to nothing going for it aside from slightly more durability.
