The point was, there was never a time where I felt so frustrated that I just flat out gave up on a playthrough. Which does happen in some games, even on subsequent play throughs. It's shittily designed, but it managed to make mock-ups of every level scrapped for Sonic 2.
Almost every concept was either incredibly vague or done in a later game. Hell, if you wanna be technical, "Rock Zone" is actually in Sonic 2 as either Hilltop or Mystic Cave.

I imagine, by Mania 2, every cut Sonic 2 zone worth making will have been made by taxman. They already did Hidden Palace and Dust Hill, all they have left is....
