It's a really good game, but there are some games in the DQ series that I personally prefer.

Even though it's a Square game, I like to consider CT as a DQ game, simply because of the Toriyama monster designs, I especially liked Spekkio going through different forms relative to your average level.

Really? I thought the different enemy placements, tech combinations, hidden/time-locked items, and different endings gave the game a lot of diverse content. It's damn impressive for a SNES game, and honestly pretty impressive even by today's standards.

No, but it does add an extra boss that's even stronger than final Spekkio. Chrono Trigger is one of those RPGs that doesn't try to be difficult. If it's the DS you're looking at, you might want to try Etrian Odyssey.

I think most mangaka who do designs for games are pretty unique. People just focus on Toriyama because Dragon Ball is the most known anime in the west.

The creator of Dragon Quest also worked on the story, which you can tell since there's many ideas that Square games never attempted. He alsoy got Toriyama on board to make the game, when Sakaguchi voiced that he wanted to make a game with Toriyama.

So I'd say its not that much of a stretch to say the Dragon Quest team was at least half of the magic of Chrono Trigger. In not more.

It's also ironic how so many people look down on Dragon Quest and obsess over Chrono Trigger at the same time. It's like a Star Wars fan bashing Star Trek while George Lucas is a huge trekkie.

I think Toriyama deserves more credit than that. Just look at the way Dragon Quest stays consistent with its world setting. I mean the names of lands and kingdoms are changing from game-to-game, but visually speaking, it's still the same iconic Dragon Quest world.

Also, am I honestly the only one who loved the monster designs? The fact that he turned the most boring RPG enemy, the slime, into a lovable mascot of the franchise, is at the very least, a testament to his creativity.

Yuji Horii is actually the guy who keeps the design of the games similar.

Toriyama has actually stated many times that he finds it hard to work on Dragon Quest games because he gets bored of working in the same fantasy setting so much. This is a guy who wanted to quit Dragon Ball before even the Piccolo arc. So I would theorize that when Yuji Horii came to him and said "Square wants to work with you to make a game you design." he was probably ecstatic.

Still makes no sense why they didn't get Toriyama to work on Cross though. He was probably busy on something else, but still. I like the designer for Cross however.

DQ in another hand, if you play just one game like a 4, 5, 7 or 8, you already get a DQ experience and that feel of adventure and how the worlds are set into kingdoms.
