what is the hardest rougelike?
Super Mario 16
>>387859219
That's not a roguelike, though.
Probably NetHack
>Spelunky
>Roguelike
>>387859396
you know what i mean
nethack is a contender, no question.
>>387859691
Obviously you don't even know what you mean, fucking retard
>>387859691
>>387859684
>>387859396
actually im retarted, i thought rouge like was just randomly generated levels with perma death
>>387859882
yeah and i thought liking traps wasn't gay
>>387859882
You should play Rogue, it's still fun and better than most roguelites today.
maybe IVAN
>>387859882
that's part of why people who like roguelikes are autistic about whether "rougelites" are called roguelikes or not
it dilutes the name and makes it hard to find actual roguelikes by flooding the "genre" with games that aren't anything like rogue (and attracts casuals who like stuff like isaac but not actual roguelikes, ruining places of roguelike discussion in the process)
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and Tales of Maj'Eyal are other ones to check out.
>>387859823
nethack is one of the easier roguelikes, though
Brogue.
>>387860283
>Still haven't managed to win a game of O-Tab because of bullshit
>>387860040
That's why it's just important to know the exact difference between roguelites and roguelikes, which is easy to get confused at first like you said but also extremely easy to distinguish. Anyone who honestly fights against it is trying to troll.
Also my vote goes for IVAN. I can't even get past the enner beast. Fuck.
Poschangband is one of the toughest rougelikes I've played because it's really fucking big, enemies get ridiculous fast and there's like 50 different resistances to keep track of.
If you're looking for hard rougelikes the best are usually edits and expansions of already popular games in the genre.
>>387860040
I'm all for the term roguelite. I love Isaac despite its shittiness, and can't deal with actual hardcore nographics rogues, but I respect those.
Give me a good, actual roguelike to play. I've tried nethack but it's a bit too esoteric. I'd like something a bit fresher.
>>387861153
An easier way to think of it is--
All rogueLIKES are technically rogueLITES
But not all rogueLITES are rogueLIKES
>>387860351
Tales of Maj is super good.
>>387861153
>I love Isaac despite its shittiness
That's because at it's core it's actually a good game, just bogged down by Edmund's bad design decisions.
>>387859219
Pixel Dungeon is really good, and has multiple difficulty settings.
>>387861216
brogue might be more your speed
if not that, then something like Caves of QUD
I'm specifically naming other RLs that run in a kind of updated version of classic RL gameplay, as opposed to rogue-lites, because your interest in nethack made me think that was what you were looking for
>>387861284
Don't even get me started on Edmund. Love him, I know he's trying, especially trying hard not to pull a notch as well, but that bitterness that he carried from the first Binding into Rebirth fucked him hard.
>>387859219
Pic related is pretty damn hard while also being fun
It's also free
>>387861216
Play Doom RL.
It's suprisingly good.
>>387861319
>>387861379
Haven't gotten past the third boss in months of playing it
>rougelike
>Picture of Spelunky
>Rougelike
>Rouge
>ROUGE
>UGE
This triggers me on many levels.
I just want a roguelike where the first few hours aren't spent being fucking shit at everything. This doesn't mean that you start the game amazing but I really like DCSS sprint since it still makes decision making important, and every turn matters but is still fast. I'd like to get to the point of midgame crawl style before a few thousand turns pass.
>>387861592
Are you using manual or automatic experience in DCSS?
>>387861374
Yeah, that's why I said actual roguelikes. Not lites, I wanted the ASCII shit where I pick a class and explore and have a fucking adventure.
>>387861391
Is it? I'll give it a shot.
>>387861216
i don't know if i'd call dungeon crawl stone soup "fresh" but it's a lot more accessible than nethack
>>387861153
i like both roguelites and roguelikes and i'd say roguelites can be just as hard as roguelikes
they're both really different and it's unfortunate that the names are so similar but hey, what can ya do?
>>387861987
I dunno how i'd describe fresh, but Nethack is just so... 80's in everything it does, you know? The humor/lighter elements especially. I want something that feels more modern.
>>387861463
Yeah it's a bitch
I also tried out the other kinds of dungeons and they're not too bad too
>>387861379
>tfw once I get to the fucking mine there's no more food to heal or not starve
I can never get past it
It's like all slot machine at that point
What's the best entry level Rougelike, Spelunky and Binding of Isaac look pretty neat are is one of those two ok to start with?
>>387861216
rainworld
>>387862276
nuclear throne
>>387862310
Not what i'm looking for family guy
>>387862276
i would recommend spelunky, but it is pretty damn tough. but if you are autistic enough like me, you could try to learn all the mechanics and eventually beat the game.
>>387859219
Magenta is a pretty solid color without actually being rouge.
>>387862276
>Rouge
Stop.
>>387860704
You haven't won bc you need to git gud, only scrubs blame the game or "bullshit."
DCSS is the best, most polished roguelike, and you're a garbage tier gamer until you've at least won a 3 rune game.
People mentioning rogue-lites need to neck themselves.
>>387861692
incursion was my all time favourite for a long time, but dev on it is going at a snail pace.
>>387862525
What exactly makes it so hard?
>>387860704
crawl is ridiculously easy if you don't play like a retard
protip don't hold tab
>>387863336
its new players not knowing all the small things, after about 400 runs i could get a pretty fair chance at beating the game 'the hard way' but only because im autistic enough to bother to learning all the small things.
>>387863402
>game that less than 0.1% of people can beat
>easy
>>387862525
>2-d platformer that any retard will beat given enough time
>hard
>>387863543
those statistics are misleading because most people don't finish games they start period, quitting after an hour or two, look at steam stats for any game
>>387863710
you realize dcss isn't a steam game? and the 0.1% stat factored out people who played below a certain amount of games
you have no idea what you're talking about, and are probably the pleb recommending spelunky in a roguelike thread
Vagante and Catacomb Kids are fantastic rougelites.
>>387863903
i know that, but it's a good reference point to people being noncommittal in general
i forget what that threshold was but it was still pretty low
spelunky isn't a roguelike
>>387859219
IVAN
>>387863267
I would like Incursion more if the developer used the fact that they're not tied down to 3.5 more before he dropped it. Noncasters are pure fucking shit if they're not Rogue, who really only gets by because they're a pseudo-caster due to UMD being overpowered. Monk in particular was worse than joke classes in other roguelikes.
