Roleplaying is only good during during the late 90s/early 00s era when roleplay help make the grind more tolerable or during the FIRST year of a new launched mmo. For the latter, the roleplaying community quickly devolved into ERP.

I RPed plenty in the past, but not in MMOs. I openly admit that I only dove into the WoW RP scene out of that trainwreck mentality: I wanted to see if it really was as bad as everyone says it was. For the most part, they're right, but on rare occasion, you can find that diamond in the shitpile; when you do, you have to hold onto that diamond like Gollum held the One Ring. My favorite character was a female troll shaman who was new to the shaman business and was learning to see everything in a new light.

From there, I dawdled in RPs in other MMOs, like launch SWTOR and late WildStar.

TESO has a pretty lively RP-community that isn't entirely ERP focused.
It's ok. I've given it a bit of a go but lost interest again.
I learned that the RPers I hate the most are play-house type family RPers who pretty much exclusively focus on how pregnant they are or what their invisible RP-babby is doing. Edgelords are a close second.

Last time I ever roleplayed in an MMO was back during Age of Reckoning.

I played as an insanely loyal zealot of tzeentch, viewing his allies as nothing more than pawns to patch up before sending back into the fray, having blessed their flesh with the will of the Raven Host.

And I played as the evil witch trope sort of character as a sorceress, existing only to inflict suffering and pain upon those who oppose her.
It was fun, finally being able to play a villain with a fuck ton of other villains.

I miss those days. Nowadays, nobody roleplays. It's not "cool" to do anything other than minmax your characters and spout memes in chat. People forget often that the game is meant to entertain, not to be a chore.

I RP in FFXIV. I've played tabletop RPGs and things like that for a large portion of my life, so I'm kind of de facto an RPer. I avoid the ERP shit because that's just weird, and the stuff that's leftover is often a bit -too- anime for my tastes.

You occasionally find cool folks that aren't too anime and are good at writing, and it makes it pretty worth it. Just stay away from the Quicksands.

There were some good parts, but humans were infested with GoT fanatics that tried to turn the world into that bullshit, sylvari were 96% the same dumb naive Mary Sue character, charr were all furries and/or elitists, asura were elitists, and norn didn't exist.

When you did find a cool group it could be baller as hell. I was in a little circle with a handful of other charr gladium RPers and they were all pretty neat. It was basically the Old Man Salt and Vinegar Variety Hour.

I know people who roleplay in WoW, there's actually a specific private server that caters to roleplayers. The RS3 friends chat for /vg/ is in an RP world so there are tons of roleplayers in Falador/PoI. I've never felt like participating but having played D&D with friends, I can understand the autistic enjoyment people get out of it. ERP on the other hand is some weird shit I ain't buying.
