If you build start with grids then it's near impossible to have your city look like shit. Then you can try building more curved roads in a suburban neighborhood

Start over then and build a city you can expand on. The way your main road just loops around in that pic looks like shit. It looks more suitable to be a town.

I'd recommend creating a couple straight arterial roads to start with and expanding off of that. Keep road hierarchy in mind and try creating distinguishable neighborhoods / districts.

It's fun once you git gud. It's not a steep learning curve or anything you just have to be able to plan well and know what looks good. You can still be successful with a shitty looking city but I like trying to make it look good and plan things logically.

For me the most fun part is trying to figure out transportation and lessen traffic congestion because it's a never ending puzzle as you expand your city.

grid system doesn't really work like that, there are no roads surrounding every single bulding, typically 2-8 buildings have yard(s) between them with small roads in them, commieblocks themselves are surrounded by medium or large sized roads, usually medium sized roads that all lead to a bigger road or a highway circle surrounding the city, multiple highway circles if city is very big

I've been to Tunisia a couple of years back and they are even more crazy about their roundabouts than brits. They try to turn any crossroad they can into a roundabout even when all the traffic in gets amounts to one guy on a bike every 10 minutes.
