It's not even just a thing between sequels of a single game... We've been getting the exact same games for like 20 years at least now. The industry is awash with almost nothing but AAA clones of the same exact genre defining titles.

There's almost no genuine innovation. We're getting the exact same gameplay experiences that we've been getting for years and years and it's getting really old.
There are exceptions but they're few and far between.

Refine the graphics, add some 'features' and come up with some trite gimmick and you've got a 'brand new' game that gamers will fucking eat up because the majority of them are low standards children.

VR is showing some promise though. At least if it's going to be the same games over and over you get to play them from a more immersive angle.

Splatoon 2 HAS to be a different game though, the first one used the gamepad as a major mechanic so you can't play it on the switch. They threw it a new campaign and and new plot stuff/characters/at least an extra mode/stages and some changes to the gameplay. You can argue it should add more and that maybe its not worth it if you bought 1 but it factually has to be a sequel.

Halo 2 used a new engine, had new game mechanics like dual wielding and vehicle hijacking, added health regen, added new weapons like the BR rifle, Gauss Canon, Covenant Sniper & carbine, and new vehicles including the Covenent Tank. Sequels definitely don't change as much now. I don't really think this is exclusive to Destiny though. Even when you compare Destiny to similar games like Borderlands, it's not like their innovations are lagging behind. Not to mention instance based multiplayer games tend to not change too much between iterations, like Monster Hunter or Phantasy star online.
Most changes are going to go unnoticed except by regular players, such as things like balance, or number of enemies, inventory space, or the amount of particle effects on screen. Hopefully console peasants will start to see 60 fps on the next generation of consoles, and even more gameplay improvements and new unique features.

As both a Halofag and a huge Destinyfag in general I can definitely see what he is saying (as is a bunch of other people). Because the general game play and engine looks to be about the same but if you played Destiny to any extent as I have the difference are way more noticeable.

For one the whole leveling systems changed since Destiny 1 in the first /real/ expansion and then infusion, loot drops, way more ways to obtain high level gear then ever, exotic quests etc.

And to add all that into a sequel of which a lot of people dropped the first game after going through the story and maybe a little endgame only to get mad at how the games economy worked at the time I can see what Bungie is thinking.

But consumer side, it's definitely a bit thin. But to it's defense the upgrade from Halo 1 to 2 was very minimal if you don't talk graphics, same with 2 to 3.

So meh, I'm still excited for it being an enormous bungiefag. But games in general have been like this for a while now.
