I just got the first one and it's pretty fun. It's my first Fate anything. I went in disliking Saber just because she's so overexposed and I was sick of seeing her everywhere, but she ended up being my favorite. Although I guess it's not the same Saber as the blue one. The fox girl annoyed me at first but by the time I finished her route I warmed up to her. I'm not sure what to make of the brown girl. The pink dragon girl is trash though.

Hopefully the sequel improves the camera and retarded level layouts. Also the missions where you have to find the invisible things to take over the territory are shit and need to go. The screen gets way too cluttered with enemies to be able to see the subtle distortions the invisible things give off.

For you it's a bit different. Emulate the first PSP game. That'll be the prequel to this game (kinda) with the universe you know. In December, there'll be an anime featuring Nero called Last Encore. There is another Extra game called CCC but it's untranslated.

Outside of extra, there's Stay Night, the original VN with an anime adaptation of one the 3 routes (another route is getting a series of movies beginning this year.) That's a different universe with a different set of rules.

There's Zero, a light novel with an anime adaptation that serves as a prequel to Stay Night. Most modern day fans begin with that.

If you do read the VN, it has a sequel called Hollow Ataraxia.

There's currently an anime airing based on a series of ln's called Apocrypha. Jeanne is the main girl of this story. So if you liked her in Extella, this is the anime to watch.

You can get into the magical girl spin off called Prisma Illya. That has 3 seasons and a movie coming next month. It's honestly not as offputting as it sounds.

There's the mobage Grand Order that you can play. Story isn't great and you guessed it, it's set in yet another different world with its own set of rules.

That covers most except for the Strange Fake VN, Carnival Phantasm (a must watch anime but only after you've experienced everything else) and some of the spin off manga like Fox Tail (Tamamo's own manga.)

The current animes are only an adaptation of the second route of the VN(Unlimited Blade Works), an adaptation of a light novel(Zero) that is a prequel of the VN but it spoils many things of the third route of the VN and an adaptation of a LN that is just garbage(Apocrypha)
I think you can play EXTRA no problem with only missing out references(The red man from EXTELLA for example since he is from the VN), but I really recommend reading the VN over watching the anime because the anime cuts out 90% of internal monologues and does some pretty dumb changes
The first route of the VN is pretty weak, but the second one quickly picks up because the MC is not as retarded
So basically the ideal order would be reading the Fate/Stay Night Realta Nua relase, reading the routes in the order of Fate, Unlimited Blade Works and Heavens Feel, the watching Zero and then playing EXTRA

If you absolutely cannot handle the first route at least try to watch UBW, if only to know the backstory behind redman and maybe convincing you to read the last route

I actually have a hard time finding any edge from Zero that wasn't already in FSN in some form, I only see Kayneth's intensive treatment done by Kerry right now. FSN had a lancer killing himself, dickworms, random kids being treated like tools in a basement, Illya getting killed in a gory fashion and so on.
The edge is only easier to see in Zero because of its LN/anime format when you had to take dozen of hours to see it in FSN.

I'm currently on Altera's route and, contrary to my expectations Tamamo's is actually the least offensive of them, while Nero's seemed to be the fanservice one to me (well, if you don't see the whole game as fanservice). Nero's route is basically just wanking her over and over. Tamamo's is focusing on one aspect of her that's been talked about in Fate/Extra and fits within her character, although the execution is lacking. Can't really give a definitive comment on Altera's since I'm still playing it, but so far its the hardest pill to swallow conceptually. All in all, I've been having quite a bit of fun with the game. Will probably buy it on a sale in the future.
