People kept falling for the survival horror meme, the games are not that. That have a steep learning curve, but after you understand the game, you are not threatened and cowering.
Haunting Ground is survival horror.
Clocktower is survival horror.
Rule of Rose is survival horror.
Silent Hill and RE have horror elements, but survival in the face of overwhelming odds is not a primary part of the gameplay, and NEVER was.

Yeah playing RE 1-3 and CV back when i was a kid not knowing what the fuck to do was what made them so scary, playing them again now they still have their appeal but once you've learned the roots and what not they're much less threatening. I miss the B movie feel but I didn't feel like anything after 3 really captured that. 7 Seems like it has it's B-Movie moments but I've not gotten around to playing it yet.

I maintain 4 did it in spades, but it didn't attempt the same kind of "you are helpless" horror, but science gone around the bend to create monsters of humans.
It was campy as hell, brought back the silly one liners and managed to blend old mechanics that existed due to necessity of the times with new ideas to make the controls less counterintuitive.
