How many of these are even playable by todays standards?

I played most when they came out, so I would still enjoy them.

In my experience of replaying old games in general only two types of games feel truly dated.
Pre-NES games and the early 3D games of the Playstation and N64.

Oldest I would go is Fallout 1. Which is actually still fucking fantastic to this day. The art, soundtrack, writing, and atmosphere will never age. Can't say that for shit like Ultima though.

It's a good game that has some issues, too many trash encounters and the plot kinda falls apart at the end of Act 2, tho I really liked the final fight and associate dialog.

It's as good a starting point as you could get I think. Just don't raise the difficulty unless you know what you're doing and the trash mobs shouldn't be too intrusive.

I recently played Deus Ex 1, Fallout 1, Gothic 1 and Might and Magic 6. All of them have shitty starts but once you start leveling up and exploring new areas they become god tier, you have to be patient with these games as they do not hold your hand.

Might and Magics as well as Gothic 1 and 2 are very playable to this day. Early TES is a love or hate kind of thing along with Ultima Underworld. Wizardry 8 is another very modern and intuitive dungeon crawler/RPG and Diablo 1 as well.
