The surgery he got will actually force him to lose weight, for a while anyway.

He's going to be miserable for a long time because the surgery he has basically makes it impossible for him to enjoy food again. His diet will be mostly liquid and any solids he eats will need to be chewed for minutes or cause him great pain. If he overeats even a little bit he's going to experience pain and possibly vomit. Eating is basically pain and misery now, for a guy whose only pleasure in life is eating.

That being said, it's possible to cheat the surgery he got. It's not easy and requires effort and learning about your own body so you can eat frequent but small amounts of food.

He'll some how miraculously regain any weight he's lost and blame it on his Mum or something.
