Has anyone played Haunting Ground on the most recent pcsx2 builds? I played through to get the best ending about 4 years ago or so, and it ran abolsutely fine, but the lighting and postprocessing effects were broken in hardware mode.

Not all of it is scripted, bit then again, RE1, & I MEAN RE1 not REmake, was scripted as well. RE4 also was a huge deviation from the original RE's so RE7 wasn't a big deal to me than it is to everyone else it seems. They are the same as they were for Haunting Ground, just don't even think about enemies until you run into one and then just run around the level until they lose you. Hiding isn't worth bothering with, they'll lose you if you keep running but they may find you if you're in a hiding spot. Haunting Ground has one addition to this, don't bother using the dog, he's unreliable.

How someone can bitch about Clock Tower 3 gameplay and then praise an almost carbon copy of it as "some of the best survival horror gameplay of the era" is baffling to me.

Go fuck yourself. The story in HG makes PERFECT sense, it's one of the most coherent and clear stories in the genre, on top being actually creepy, plus it's not about fucking zombies which is an enormous plus. And Hewie is not "barely functional"; he's essential.

The game has flaws, the biggest ones being that the stealth is unreliable and the boss fights shitty, but it's solidly within the top 10% of survival horror games made and a real underappreciated gem.

Haunting Ground is a survival horror game where you play as Fiona, a deliciously vulnerable and helpless piece of prime rapebait who has to dodge a variety of supernatural rapists and escape a big fuckoff mansion. Haunting Ground has "combat" but not really. The only mandatory fights are the four (five) boss battles, and most of those are really puzzles in disguise. Fiona is weak as shit so instead of fighting you really should just run and hide whenever the rape posse shows up.

It has very similar hiding mechanics to Clock Tower 3 (and 2 and 1 other 1) so the comparison is apt,but Hauting Ground is much better than CT3.

You can kick the stalkers asses though if you want.

Its possible to set up an effective tag team by having fiona stun them with kicks while hewie charges up a leaping bite, items you can use as mines and bombs, ledges you can knock them off, and places where hewie can ambush them for an instant KO

everytime you knock a stalker out through they grow stronger, and will be harder to deal with the next time, so its best to only fight when you really need to.

Also as the game goes on each stalker becomes more dangerous, so combat becomes less and less viable like one of the last stalkers HAS A FUCKING GUN, so kicking him will only lead to you getting shot in the face

I'll try explaining what happens in Rule of Rose. Do note that it could be some mistakes here and there, it's been a while since I last indulged myself into that game.
Jennifer was a young adult all the time and not a child. Right at the beginning, she sits on a bench in a park and sees kids playing together, right above her is an airship flying by, these triggers so she "fall into herself" in her own mind, uncovering memories of a past that were completely blank. She basically is a lucky girl despite being unlucky. As a child, before she wound up at the orphanage she was with her parents on that airship, something happened and it crashed, killing everyone on that airship except for Jennifer. She was found and taken in by a man and nursed back to being healthy. She stumbles upon the orphanage and starts spending time there, the man who took Jennifer in feared she would abandon him. His mind is somewhat delusional and is paranoid due to him losing his son and he took in Jennifer and dressed her up as his son and pretended nothing had happened to his son. Jennifer got attached to a dog, which caused a friend of hers at the orphanage to become jealous and kills the dog and as punishment manipulates the man who took Jennifer in and he becomes "the wolf", where he then starts running around killing the children at the orphanage. The only one survivng from that incident as well was Jennifer. The police was either contacted beforehand when that event took place or it was later, in any case, they found her unconscious and took her away from there and Jennifer was probably placed in a foster home.

From what I understand Fionas father, Ugo, was a successful Homunculus created by Lorenzo. Ugo left the castle after he and Ayla fell in love and later on they had Fiona. She was never actually on an airship - the classrooms in the orphanage are full of details of airships including plans for interiors, stories of an airship crash etc.

The man had started killing people and feeding them to his son. or killing people after his son died - something to do with the "peas" he talks about in his diary. Jennifer's frenemy began deliberately dressing up as a boy and using the man as her servant - but she couldn't really control him and he snapped.

Not saying those are true, just vaguely remember them being thrown around.

As for the (true/best) ending the way I understood it was that Jennifer had come to terms with what happened and forgiven both herself and the "bad" girls at the orphanage because they were all victims, but coming to terms with it also involved a certain degree of self-delusion in dismissing all the negative memories as the product of a child's imagination (e.g. the teenage girl being sexually molested, the children planning murder) warping real events, when some of them really did occur.

Fantastic story anyway, always makes me think every time I recall a scene and think about what it was supposed to represent.
