The game has no noncosmetic permanent things. Crates are free to open. You are rewarded with more fun bux for doing well and not just showing up.

Because it has struck a chord just right. It has distilled the core loot-n-shoot fun factor from DayZ and made it much more enjoyable/bearable. Its gunplay is not superb but understandable. It's punishing but very rewarding at the same time. That makes a fun game.

It has an addictive gameplay loop. In a land of dotas and csgos a videogame that you can play with your friends that takes less then a half hour for a match to end is a nice change of pace.
