The numbers tell you how many mines are in the 8 adjacent squares. If it's a 2, there are 2 mines immediately adjacent. If it's a 7, there are 7 mines immediately adjacent, etc.

This game, like Solitaire, is bad because the random generation isn't always winnable. And this doesn't even show itself early into the game, you can go the entire game playing flawlessly and more often than not you get a fat fucking slap to the face for your trouble and you'll probably lose through no fault of your own.
This is terrible design.
