Pretty half baked Banjo remake, although a lot of what people bitched about in reviews was either flat out wrong (controls and camera really weren't an issue outside of minigames and if you found the hub world confusing to navigate then you are a fucking retard because it isn't even that big) or shit that they fucking asked for (hurr why do they have stupid voices and grunts and groans wtf I funded this and I love Banjo Kazooie except I've never actually played any of them I'm Jim Sterling).

That being said when the controls and camera were bad they were horrible. The first, fourth and last bosses were downright infuriating and that slide section in the hub world can go fuck itself. Oh yeah and the minecart sections, fuck them.

Overall 7/10 for me. Pick it up on sale.

No it didn't. He voiced some random who character who you probably wouldn't even notice it's him voicing because they all talk gibberish. Even if he didn't do the debate and non of that shit happened the game still wouldn't have done well because his fans wouldn't have been the majorit of buyers anyway.

That aside the main reason it failed is because it banked too much in nostalgia. Meaning that while it did bring back the good of the old banjo games and other 3D platformers, it also brought back the bad shit no one liked (like the trivia boss battles) while also failing to add anything new. People were like, oh yeah man 3D platform banjo is back to only then realise that they may not have liked the old game as much as they thought.

Grant Kirkhopes music AND sound design made the Banjo Kazooie games what they were and Yooka Laylee only has the music. The sound design is godawful.

Artstyle is a goddamn mess where you activate a tiki totem/easter island looking thing to bring down a mechanical platform and there's a pig knight and refrigerator NPC within spitting distance of this.

On the prehistoric world.

It's one thing to have eyes on everything, characters talking all fucked up, cartoony worlds/characters and collectathanons but they manage to trip up on so many different issues

The two MCs were really shitty designs and the world was not any fun to look at or be in.

That the core of a game like this. Its why BK is amazing, its why people love Spyro, its why people love Crash, its why Conker is the best game ever. Platformers/Collectathon games need to have cool characters and a well-designed and fun world.

You ruin the controls for a platform, you ruined the game... you can tell they know they fucked up, just look at the si lo of platforms in YL vs BK. Bigger platforms means giving the player more chance to fuck up, which wasn't hard when the character is so floatie

You missed out Sterling complaining that the combat was too easy, as you only had to push one button to win, except when it doesn't work for some reason.
Even if you ignore that he likes musou, platformers are never about combat, and that it's clearly telegraphed when you need to use sonar shot instead of the spin atack.

I liked Grunty's Furnace Fun, and I think one Quackfire Quiz would have been okay, as Capital B stalling for time, but three was really pushing it.

ALso I still don't understand where people had camera control issues outside the Rampo fight, or people that say the hubworld is hard to navigate through. The only bit that's slightly hidden is the entrance for MMM, which is in a water section just after you get a breathe underwater move

four big points:

1. levels were way too big and not laid out coherently. couple this with...

2. things in earlier levels being inaccessible without future moves you get later, and you've got a nightmare scenario where you've already been everywhere in a level trying to collect as much as possible and you don't remember which areas have the thing you are missing. or alternatively you've got one thing missing to 100% a level but you've been everywhere and trying to find it with all these tiny areas besides the main zone is a total chore.

3. the energy bar has no purpose outside of challenges. why even make it a thing when you are exploring the levels and the hub? it only acts as a nuisance and doesn't add any difficulty otherwise. let me travel around freely with this game's version of talon trot.

4. probably the worst thing, the fact that later in the game you unlock a move that lets you fly anywhere with no limitation. in banjo kazooie it made sense, you needed a pad, and to get the pads to appear, you had to play through a level normally to unlock them. in yooka-yaylee you just have it at all times, completely negating any reason to do any skilled platforming. just fly wherever. fuck it.

i was so excited for this game, and i tried so hard to love it. i can get a lot of enjoyment out of platformers that are less than stellar, but this game just isn't fun to play.

Number 2 is why they have the hunter tonic, unless it's the isometric palace piece of shit. plus it's been patched to last 30 quillies now instead of 10-20 I can't remember what it was before

The energy bar they had to because of invincibility.

The fly anywhere move is mainly so you can bactrack easier, it expects you to have already done shit like gloomy glacier before you know there will be a flying move later.

I was surprised how fucking mad the game me.

For example.
First phase of the final boss i go through the natural process if elimination. But for some reason the attack didn't register. So i start looking for alternatives around the room. Go through every ability again, doesn't register. So i look up a youtube video and realize i already found the answer but it didnt feel like working.
Think that makes me happy? It doesn't.

Also that boss in the casino world where you have to ride that fuckface mine cart? That fucking boss pissed me off. That minecart fuck, fuck you.

Also the game felt very short, maybe banjo was as well, i don't remember.
