The characters have that eerie, cheap saturday morning CGI look of today's kids shows. When my nephew visits and watches stuff on Nick JR it creeps me out in the same way. The characters are detailed but so lifeless and plastic.

It was JUST an N64 era platformer. Literally not one improvement was made other than more polygons. Every single issue from that era (most notably shitty cameras) is still intact.

It has both the good and the bad from 90's platformers.

problem is that modern games are so babied by games that the don't know how to deal with the bad

Biggest issue is the level design is clearly made by people who have either never designed anything or not done so since Banjo came out. All of them feel barren, empty, and you eventually hit a point where you realize you've been doing literally nothing except walking around looking for stuff to actually do.

The presentation is also dog shit. Every level except the ice world looks fucking horrible and completely uninspired, none of these places feel alive. Characters are just awkwardly standing in corners not interacting with the environment. Character design is boring. Music is mostly mediocre. Hub is a fucking mess, takes forever to find where you wanna go. Addiction to putting bloom all over the lighting. And the writing is straight up unfunny most of the times, Capitol B's "jokes" are embarrassing even for this kind of humor.

Worlds are way too big, would have been much better to have twice as many worlds of half the size but I'm sure the giant world thing was a result of not having the budget to create more diverse assets to make that possible.

It's entire world expansion gimmick breaks down once you realize there is little to do in the expanded worlds unless you've collected all of the moves from future worlds. Poor SoBs that don't realize this will have the game waste their time for daring to use an advertised feature.

But if you play through the game in a way that won't leave you wanting to strangle yourself, by rushing through all five worlds to get all the moves, you will find that any and all challenge is removed by flight.

Tribalstack Tropics is just a bunch of floating platforms with a sort-of tiki theme to it.

Moodymaze Marsh is a dark and ugly and completely uninteresting to look at, some of the texturing on that level is also retardedly bad.

Capitol Cashino is just a large space with a bunch of models placed in it. They somehow managed to make a casino level boring.

None of these levels have anything iconic or particularly memorable about them. A big part of why people struggle with the hub is because there's no easily recognisable aspects to go "Oh that thing is here so that means I'm near...", it all just blends into each other. Compare it to a hub like Delfino Plaza, which has every level entrance marked on a significant structure, most of which can be seen anywhere in the hub.

the thing that bothers me the most is it looks cheap. the "realistic" textures and assets don't gel with the cartoony character design and it all feels slightly better than of those fan made platformer remakes which suffer from excatly the same problem, they should have gone cel shaded or low poly

Sounds good. If you wanted to actually have an argument you'd say how the moving platforms are just metal in every level.

It combined the worst aspects of Nintendo 64-era Rareware collect-a-thons with a cheap presentation that made it look like a Unity asset flip, with crowdfunding preying on nostalgia to boot. I didn't need some half-baked E-celeb shooting his mouth off to sour me on this game.
