Who gives a shit? It'd only ramp up enemy damage and enemy defence to stupid levels, while earned money and exp get's something like like 10 times less than Normal.
That's shitty game design, not worth playing.

didnt really have any issue with merciless since i just farmed enough in the current dungeon to keep me overleveled for the next one

soon as i could farm death game was over.

its not a particularly hard/challenging game, nor was it supposed to be

Merciless is easier because of the 3x dmg boost to weaknesses

I beat it on Hard only because I didn't know it existed until I skimmed through the DLC menu.

Start with 3 FES, or alternatively Portable if you want better combat but worse presentation. Play 4 Golden if you can (get a cheap ass PSTV and hack it) but if you can't 4 is fine. Then play 5. I recommend against playing the newer ones first because the quality of life improvements will spoil you, like being able to choose what skills to inherit.
1 and 2 are completely different games and aren't in the same universe IIRC.
