Even though the Wii U game was very good, I agree that the NSMB format has gotten pretty stale. I'd like to see more diversity in world themes beyond the grass/desert/ice/beach/jungle/mountain/sky/lava repetition.

draw on the compact level design of super luigi u and the variety of intuitive stage gimmicks from 3d world (don't recycle them), polish up the visuals and make mario a bit slower to accelerate
You can take Yoshihahaout of levels again.
And they come in different colors with special abilities again.
Better aesthetics than the NSMB games and less floatiness.

I like the idea of more/shorter levels over fewer/longer levels. At the same time I kind of want a long, arduous final castle and an even more long/arduous final level for whatever bonus world.
Also, I'd like to see more inventiveness with the boss fights, which are usually the easiest part of the castles/airships.
Just make more of them. I want a NSMB 3 4 5 6 7 8 and 9 etc I loved all of those games I don't care what anybody says. Maybe more types of comfy weather or night levels like in The Lost Levels.
Something that actually shakes up the formula unlike NMB2 and NMBWU
