I think Demon's Souls and Bloodborne contain the happiest endings. In Demon's, one ending is the old one goes back asleep, the fog is lifted and the soul arts are forgotten, but still, all those people are still dead, the world is still messed up, however, the world has a new monumental - you - to help keep it all working. And then in Bloodborne you are severed from the Hunter's Dream, wake up in the dawn in Yharnam and probably go home. That's it. Or you become a squid baby and get a new mom, depends on your outlook if this is good or not.

Maughlin gave me the worst feeling in my gut out of all the NPC in Dark Souls. The best example of the "Hollow out if you have no goal". theme.

The Deep is rather hard to explain.
Everytime an undead "dies" and loses their humanity, it sinks to the lowest depths it possibly can. This is because humanity is heavy/weighty. Overtime, the accumulation of humanity begins to displace the water at the bottom of the water, hence the deeps association with it.
Normally, the deep isn't a problem, but just like Ariandel, the humanity has begun to rot and this rot produces devouring monsters like the locusts that want to consume humanity.
