There's 3 versions. Original on PS1, War of the Lions on PSP, and War of the Lions on mobile.

The original has

If you have a lot of time on your hands, I'd suggest the PS1 version first, so you can understand the quotes that the rest of the FFT community uses. Then play the WOTL version on PSP (PPSSPP emulator is black magic good) and use a different team or setup. The great thing about FFT is that you have an FF3/FF5-tier level of control over your party composition, so each playthrough is quite different.

The three best things about FFT, IMHO, in no particular order:

And I'd like to have a TRPG like that, and unfortunately XCOM has neither... I still love it, but FFT is characteristic among TRPGs, there are like 2 or 3 non-FFT related TRPGs that I know of where it's much more difficult to gang up and kill characters one at a time while reducing most battles to little territory disputes with no vanguards without high evade and finger crossed, or stealth, or cover, and shit like that. It's just so different, I NEED another FFT, and FFTA was not good enough

Fire Emblem's already making big strides in bringing it back. It's ironic, a franchise that hadn't changed its formula since the beginning made a grand comeback with some new ideas at around the same time Final Fantasy entered its post-13 tailspin.
Final Fantasy X and XII could've been the start of something amazing for the main line, but they misread the flaws of those two games and completely scrapped the amazing parts of them. You CANNOT have a multi-character solo rpg that has challenging and engaging combat unless it is turn-based. Real time combat combined with multiple characters prevents you from adding mechanics beyond stats and attacks. Positioning (hardly at play at all in XII for anything but delaying an incoming attack), terrain, elevation, you need a side board with its own cards being played to create a challenge that still has a diversity of solutions, and these things will be a nuisance at best or game-breaking at worst if you're trying to direct multiple units in real time. You also need to ensure that each unit is unique from the rest and has a niche that they can fill comfortably.

For some reason they scrapped their series entirely though and have been bouncing back and forth between literal movies and a really fucking faggy version of kingdom hearts for the past decade.

Why does everyone consider hex tiles such a fucking improvement over square ones? I'll NEVER understand this. It was the same argument used when Civilization switched from squares to hexes, that it "increased" movement options even though it actually reduced them by 2.
