The amount of colors they use way exceeds 16-bit limitations. Just look at 1991 Green Hill to 2017 Green Hill. There's much more subtle colors, extra shades, and more objects have their own unique palettes (like the HUD and rings aren't the same color as the flower)

Guy almost beat the classic sonic angel island level in Generations all by himself. I only literally had to help him on the end part with the platform you have to move by running and stopping and changing direction and only because he didnt know how to stop it getting stuck in a wall and kept jumping to his death.

He can easily clear Green Hill. That guy playing should be ashamed of himself if a literal five year old can do better. Much better I must add.
