This falls under the theory of monarchy abuse. When PS3 was struggling in its early years, Sony did everything they could to make their platform more attractive. Online pay remained free, an optional PS+ service offered "free" games, cross-buy was introduced across PS3, PSP, and Vita, among some other things I'm probably forgetting. PS3 ended up being a more valuable platform overall and, eventually, it overtook the Xbox 360 by leaps and bounds. With the coming of the PS4, Sony was so far ahead that they could start abusing their position and make greater profits without losing much favor. Now, all of a sudden, backwards compatibility is dropped (and no, PS Now is not a suitable or excusable replacement), PS+ is now required for online play, even PS2 games purchased on PS3 need to be re-purchased on PS4 despite Sony pushing for the opposite during the PS3's run. I get that PS2 games on PS4 are upscaled very nicely, I'll definitely give them that, but it still feels like a complete 180 in terms of Sony's philosophy during the PS3. Sadly, it's going to continue this way unless Sony believes that they can make significant profit otherwise, or as a trump card if they begin to lose favor.

Same here but for a different reason. My PS2 dying on me recently, and obviously outside of Sony's official support, has reminded me that consoles aren't built to last forever. I mean, a lot of things are like that, but unlike PCs or DVD players or some shit, game consoles are unique in that they their platform is extremely proprietary and can't always be easily emulated. It's ridiculous that almost every single movie, no matter how great or how shitty, is easily accessible. Even if we're talking about the general high prices of Criterion films, it still pales in comparison to some of the ridiculously rare games out there. Even as late as GameCube and PS2, games like Cubivore and Rule of Rose go for stupid fucking prices and there's little reason why the original rights holders won't re-release them in some form. It's like if half the movies ever made were only released on Super 8 and getting a hold of them is a pain in the ass. What the PS3 did with its massive digital library of PS1 and PS2 games as well as backwards compatibility with physical discs should be the standard but of course, it's fucking not.

Of course. A company's "golden years" tend to be during a time when they're most desperate. Nintendo always had fierce competition; the NES was new and the SNES had Genesis. By the N64, Nintendo became complacent and felt that victory was pretty much assured and this carried over to the GameCube. I felt that the Wii, more than anything, was a total hail marry that ended up being a rousing success, which turned into further complacency with the WiiU.

The middle ground where the best quality often comes from. Give a company too much and they become lazy and/or greedy. Give a company too little and they die off. Meet that balance somewhere in the middle and they'll continue to work hard for their earnings. There are a lot of other factors, of course, but I feel that this holds very true for the most part.

Not what I buy it for. I play every multiplat better, and the games cost less money, I play them with whatever controller I desire, and don't have to use a controller for FPS or other games that aren't suited to them.
My Nintendo consoles are for exclusives. (Pic related, and there's about 6 more downloaded retail games on my WiiU)

Why would I EVER pay 250 dollars for 6 games? 500 or whatever for the pro if I want to run them properly (sometimes). PS4 is a garbage investment for a semi idort. It's barely a step above the Xbone and it's literal 1 game (Sunset Overdrive) I can't play elsewhere.

Not to mention that unlike my WiiU, 3DS, or Vita, the PS4 doesn't offer my anything like portability or off TV play that my PC can't do. I'd NEVER go out of my way to play a game on PS4 whereas I have decided to get games on those 3 consoles for varying reasons.

Ps4 also totally lacks a multiplayer killer app, which is pretty much the only reason to own consoles in the first place, Smash, Mario Kart, and other games me and my friends can play together are the motivations I've had to get every Nintendo console and Sony doesn't have an equivalent that can touch them.

This is no longer 100% true and, unfortunately, it hasn't been for the last several years. For the most part, you are right but you will often have to rely on fans to fix what developers have overlooked or just straight up ignored. You're also ignoring the upfront costs associated with each platform. A $300 console is nothing to scoff at when an equivalent graphics card alone cost the same, and more factors such as RAM, CPU, and the motherboard still need to be considered. While it's true that building a PC is fairly easy and the CPU and motherboard need to be replaced rarely, it can still be argued which path is truly cheaper down the line. Furthermore, consoles tend to have far more stable updates to their platform while PC games might not perform as well due to something as finicky as the brand name of your GPU. I've had it happen a few times where I wanted to continue enjoying a game but a new update caused something to stop working, and now I have to spend the better part of a day figuring out why and how I can fix it. God forbid the game is older and is no longer officially supported.

If you want the largest library for the cheapest price, the answer is an absolute no brainer. PC wins, hands down. If you're generally only interested in recent releases and you want a pretty hassle free way to experience them, then it's tough to argue against dedicated consoles. It's not even about being lazy either; a lot of people would rather spend more of their day playing games rather than setting them up.

And how increasing the framerate would break the game because the in-game physics were tied to it?
