Sega has arguably done more villainous stuff than Nintendo though. One of the reasons they dropped out of consoles is because Sega USA and Sega Japan kept fighting with each other and doing shitty stuff.

Don't blame the company obligated to protect their IP, blame the idiot developers for trying to make a fucking game based on someone else's IP.

Plus, you can't say SEGA wouldn't do the same in other cases, because the whole reason Freedom Planet stopped being a Sonic fangame was to preemptively avoid copyright issues when they decided to sell their project.

Sega C&Ded Streets of Rage Remake all the way back in 2011. Since then, they've chilled out and offer extensive modding support for their games. At the same time, Nintendo threatened legal action against Project M and went out of their way to kill fucking tech demos like Mario 64 HD,.
