It's a decent game but could have been really really good had they not dropped the ball with diplomacy and adding unique content. Overall it's effectively civ 5 reskinned with a few gimmicks like miasma, water cities, and aliens (which are just slightly expanded barbarians)

Well since it's my first time playing such a game, I thought it'd be a decent start at least because I really like the way it looks. Doesn't really matter to me if it's not the deepest game ever.

Seems to me all the criticism comes from prior expectations since this was a new Civ game and kind of a return to the holy cow that was Alpha Centauri.

Play Endless Space 2 for a space 4X game, Stellaris has feature-bloat.

Never tried the expansion, but I found the base game pretty boring. It's like a lame version of CIv V. All the factions are boring af and I saw no difference among them.
