Undertale's broader appeal is pretty easy to see - it's friendly for pretty much any age group. LISA is extremely dark by comparison.

I like both, though. That's probably not too uncommon.

Because LISA somehow manages to be more heavy-handed and less organic than Undertale. An RPG being rife with grammatical and spelling errors is also laughable. The only thing really going for it is the humour, which is genuinely funny at times but ends up bordering on reddit-tier with its overuse of non sequiturs, and which is all the minor characters exist for, aside from the melodramatic and hamfisted ending. I can definitely see this as something I would have enjoyed if I was younger, such as in my late teens or early 20s, and if I was American.

When I went in I immediately turned on Pain Mode because thats how I play my games.
and on top of that I chose to not take Joy because I assumed it was going to affect the ending.
only to find out that after beating LISA The Painful, Pain Mode overrides the Joyful and Joyless endings

You want an honest, genuine, non-political answer, OP?
LISA: The Painful has a good story and a good soundtrack but fucking awful gameplay with only a couple redeeming ideas. Unfortunately that gets completely fucked over by The Joyful having completely irredeemable gameplay and story, leaving only the top-tier soundtrack.
Undertale has a good gameplay concept that's woefully underexplored and underdeveloped by the creator not being very good at any major aspect of gamedev. (This is made VERY clear by looking for two motherfucking seconds at the monkeyfucking retarded mess that is the decompiled game, not to mention his artbook showing several things that weren't implemented because he just flat out got too lazy to actually figure out how to do them.) The story is pretty good but also gets undermined by the gameplay not working too well with it and the general ideas and tones explored in the story also being woefully underexplored. The soundtrack is god-tier and added a lot to cover up the flaws in the story, at least on the first playthrough.

Generally, Undertale feels better as a full package on your first ride to the true ending, even if you realize pretty fast how underutilized its major ideas were whenever you try going for any other ending. LISA is a more consistent package on replays, but the lackluster gameplay and the much more bleak story (Or terrible story, when it comes to The Joyful) makes people much less likely to yell out onto social media/4chan/etc that people NEED to play it before they get spoiled, meaning it didn't spread anywhere near as fast as Undertale did. That, and Undertale's kickstarter was more popular from the outset, not to mention that Toby had whatever boost he might've gotten from being involved with Homestuck prior to Undertale.

Both games are about equal overall, honestly, with both of them having very different strengths and weaknesses.
