Just completed it on PS4.
Not sure is this upscaled port or what.

PS4 port included after story which is an extension from main story epilogue.

I not going to spoil it out but the last boss in the after story is very related to the main plot.

Dawn is IV, the one that explains why the Goddesses have wings
It's noncanon because Falcom outsourced to different devs to make two different Ys IVs, and this one deviated from the script because the devs they gave it to went absolutely nuts and changed a bunch of shit to make it more hardcore, which Falcom didn't like because they're japanese and it's impolite to have fun while writing or something I guess

If it didn't get off to such a rocky start it would be my favorite Ys game period. Beginning with Sanctuary Approach, the pacing and world design is immaculate, enough so that I basically did the entire second half of the game in one 12 hour sitting. I'm not a fan of most of the remixes of old songs, but Crater, Ancient Legend and Iris get me going. The new music is across the board incredible though.

Some of the boss fights are less than thrilling, but I really like how the bulk of them make creative use of Flash Guard and Flash Step, especially on higher difficulty settings. It's a lot better than Seven at having party members other than Adol that are fun to play as tool

In terms of presentation, I don't love the character designs (especially since the ones in Dawn are so brilliant) and the quality of the illustrations feels incredibly cheap compared to nearly every other Ys game. It's a concession I'm willing to make though

It took them 20 years to realize "man, a lot of this stuff we put in the script was pretty weird, let's scrap it," and they did
But then they replaced a big chunk of it with "safe" writing for lack of better way to phrase it, which ultimately made it all pretty boring

Lilia showed up and fucking died in Mask, forcing Adol to carry her corpse around while bumping monsters
Shit was brutal

Really, Dawn and Mask both did an okay job of having the major villains be threatening and present enough to be memorable, whilst in Celceta they were literally who chumps that fought you maybe once and then died with no fanfare
Real shame there- sure, Ys was never really plot-heavy or anything, but I've always appreciated that early-90s method of handling things

Gust of Wind and the Morning After the Storm are great, I'm glad it brought Iris back too
Removing A Great Ordeal and Walking the Path of Legend, also bastardizing General Leo's theme, was unforgivable though
Despite enjoying Seven (and later VIII) a lot I wasn't impressed by anything about Celceta and Dawn is still my favorite, but, different tastes I guess

I know we all pretend to be hardcore here but if you even have to choose between easy or normal, go normal. Either that or go with hard, you'll get what I mean once you reach that oversized mermaid. There's challenge, and then there's tedium.

It's considered one of the more difficult ones, but you really should play on at least hard for the extra challenge. Boss attacks change on higher difficulties so it's not just bullet sponge bullshit on higher difficulties like many other games.

Karna is an obvious exception. Griselda is great too, I just wish she was playable. Felt like a waste of such a cool character design since you barely interact with her. I hated how Adol, Duren and the Clan of Darkness looked though, Celceta easily has Adol's worst costume
