How much do you value writing in videogames?

Not at all. If you can't tell a story using the medium of video games itself you're just wasting your time. Putting lines and lines of text for people to read is not immersive or engaging. Show the writing through the gameplay itself.

If it's good then it can carry a game by itself (see: The very best visual novels, the very best RPGs).

If it's bad, then it can destroy a game (see: most visual novels, bad RPGs)

Most games would be better with strong writing, but any game can be ruined by bad writing.The happy medium would be for more games to go for subtle writing, background storytelling and the like, rather than pumping mediocre cutscenes.
