MG1 is a bit clunky so only play it if you realy dont mind old clunky games.
At best watch a YouTube playthru or a walkthru for the bare bones story it has.
MG2 is amazing considering how old it is and what platform its on.

After that just ply the games in order of release.

I also recommend watching Portable ops movie version on YouTube while its supposedly not canon a lot of the stuff in it just makes so much sense for the continuity of the entire series and the story is interesting. Althou its the clunkiest game in the series made when people dint realy knwo how to make true 3d PSP games and use its full potential.

It doesn't. Metal Gear has a lot of weird shit like actual psychic powers but they brush it off with "nanomachines son". Not sure how you can brush off sky portals to nanomachines

if you don't feel like playing PW, go youtube the cutscenes. It's like a small portable practice run at the new gameplay style the developers did before making MGSV

MGSV had a really fucked up development and it shows in the story. it's very disjointed and feels slapped together. Good gameplay tho.

I told him to skip MG1 not MGS1.

MG1 has almost no story and enemies can only see you in a straight line.
Its ok as one of the earliest stealth games but its not exactly fun to play today unless you are a die hard fan who can tolerate nes levels of AI and game play even for the MSX1 Version.

It has no appeal to adults, considering it butchers the characterization of Raiden, ignores the state of the world post-MGS4 (you'll understand after playing MGS4), has butt rock as its soundtrack and has the shallowest gameplay Platinum ever made if you disregard the Activision tie-in titles.
