Start with 7, then play 6, 5, and 4, in that order. After that go from 8 to 10 to 12 to the XIII trilogy. After that go back and play 1 and 2. After that you can safely ignore everything else, but you might still want to give 9, XV, Type Zero, Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Crystal Chronicles a shot. After all of that you could torture yourself by playing the MMO but I don't suggest it. If at any point you find yourself playing a game that you actively hate, move onto the next one in the list. You don't have to finish a game you don't like unless you're planning on arguing over which games are better or worse.

The most recent FF games I've been disappointed by were FF:Type 0 and FFXV.

Both had incoherent stories but a fun battle system. I had such high hopes for both.

The only tedious parts are 100%ing the enemy book(you dont need all pages for every enemy just kill every enemy once) and cartographer(enter each map zone once).

The 100 level trials can be somewhat difficult but you're allowed to respec your party mid battle. Game took me a week to platinum by playing on and off.

This meme has to stop, you can't really specialize until very late in the game when you get Friend Spheres. There are points where you can go over fifty nodes without a branch.

It's a roundabout job system at best.

FFX, English voices or Japanese? I played FFXIII with Japanese because of butchered script, and FFXV because Gladio sounds kinda dumb in English and seeing the rare case of good Japanese voice acting with Noctis at the campfire scene was pretty moving. I didn't know nips could imitate emotions. For XII I plan on English, and for XIV I went with Jap until 3.0 then switched to English and it's nice.

So how is XV, really? I hear people say it's not a good FF game, while others claim it is.

I'm still waiting for a PC release, but the cast looks uninspired, and I'm not sure I like the sort of urban-fantasy look it's got going. Still, I like a good story, and a good setting, I'm not too bothered if the gameplay doesn't follow traditional forms.

If you're willing, just slowly work your way through all of them. The first is pretty basic, but it's a good entry point. If you want to see how they improved on the games over time - even if they aren't strictly related and change shit up all the time - play them in release order. But, if you really want to just play "the good ones", go with the suggestions of the other anons.

The issue is that you probably won't be able to go back to the older games because they're "too old" or some shit after you've played what is basically years worth of refining the gameplay, trying out new things etc.

You can start with FF7. It's not a bad game, but it was babby' first Final Fantasy for many, so the nostalgia factor is strong with this one. I don't think it's the best in the series, but it was not my first Final Fantasy.

FF6 is a good start, it's the pinnacle of the 2D final fantasy games in terms of gameplay, story and grafix. 4 is bretty gud too, and 5 is more of the classic original Final Fantasy feel with a job changing system, if you cant' be bothered to play the first one.

The story and characters are trash but LR actually has a fucking excellent combat system. The ATB and class switching was a good mechanic and perfect guards were satisfying to pull off. The world and time mechanics are well implemented and dress up is fun.
The best FF is Tactics though.

By fucking who? Yeah, it's a fine game, but it's so fucking wonky that no one in their right mind would call it one of the better Final Fantasy's. Fetch quests, fucking horrendous story (even XIII had a better story), combat system that sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, magic is fucking stupid, dungeons being largely hit or miss, and a largely forgettable cast aside from the 4 bros and the villain.

No fucking long time FF fan would call it a "return to form". It's far from the form of what makes FF great.

Are you judging it based on the number of reviews or the content of the reviews? Because no shit FFXV is going to have more positive reviews than fucking IX which was made 17 years ago. There are more outlets now, which also means more people who have most likely never played a FF other than VII/X or have no idea what FF is and just did the review because it's what was on their list of big titles. I don't even hate FFXV. I had fun with it, but it's certainly not one of the better reviewed FF games. It's actually on the lower tier of scores when it comes to mainline FF games. Not that reviews should matter, but you brought them in to the argument.

The thing that sucks about XV is in the very VERY few moment when it shines, it has a some of my favorite FF moments. At the end of Ch10 when blind Iggy gives his speech to the group about Noct being king and him wanting to stick with them I felt really powerful. Everybody meme's the campfire scene, but yeah, it is honestly good.

Gameplay wise its a mixed bag. I hate it when people say "well if you just ignore this" or "If you play it this way" but I have found that playing XV with the UI off and using items very limited or not at all makes the game about two or three times as fun. No big block QTE on screen every 10 seconds, you have to actually watch enemies. You feel more inclined to go for linkstrikes and stuff. You use weapon movesets more. You dodge and blink more. There's a lot there, the game was just not designed around it properly at all.

Hellfire is great. Wish it went Ardyn fight then Ifrit instead of the other way around
