Why is this game so unappreciated?
>>
It's preceded by better games
>>
>>387640052
because the second half of the game is a slog
>>
Only cucks hate this game.
>>
*burp*
>>
People expected more of the same and were annoyed by some of the changes

It has faults, sure, but it's still a very effective and disturbing entry in the series. People who have played PT but not played this, you might (re)consider. There is a specific vibe in this game that for me was also present in PT.
>>
It's an experimental game and not really a proper sequel. I get the hate but I liked it anyway. It feels like a more balanced survival horror than the previous games and still had Yamaoka working his magic.
>>
if it didnt have good atmosphere it would have been completely forgotten
>>
It's not. It feels horrible to play and none of the places save Henrys apartment complex is interesting

I loved the atmosphere.
soundtrack is absolute madness https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH2TnKokmYs

It does get boring halfway through but its a recurrent pattern for horror games.
>>
I had this as a kid and hated it. Cold never figure out what to do, eventually gave up and never played another silent hill game again
>>
>>387640052
It's silly and poorly made. Plus it was made by Team Silent B team, so we don't even need to defend it to protect Team Silent's reputation or anything. Sh1-3 are the official SH games, the rest is the rest.
>>
That burping monster had me laughing and then annoyed.
>>
this trailer is actually better than the game

>>
>>387641206
This trailer is some legit weird stuff.
>>
>>387640052
It's not actually a real silent hill game. It was a finished game that was repurposed with silent hill assets to push a game out the door like SMB2 USA
>>
>>387642718
>t. revisionist

It was always a Silent Hill game during the actual development. It only started out as The Room in concept stages.
>>
What....the hell?
>>
No Heather in it.
>>
>>387643454
Also Konami didn't give a fuck, they just wanted to keep churning out horror games and repeat SH2's success, which of course failed.

loved the ghosts because they tied into the story and couldn't really be killed
>>
Repetitive plus non-killable enemies are always shit in any game. Doesn't help the three before it were so great.
>>
>>387644236
The thing is that the ghosts go completely against everything Silent Hill was about. Even Homecoming did a better job in depicting how the soul of tortured people looks like in the otherworld.

Why do people shit on Homecoming's combat system? Let's be honest, it was a vast improvement over the original system where monsters were damn near impossible to kill unless you stepped on them. Seriously, whose idea was it to make stepping on them the killing blow?

guys I downloaded SH2 from the pastebin but the link to the fog fix doesn't work

Is there an alt link?
>>
>>387645109
Fogfix is easy to find:
http://ps2wide.net/pc.html#sh2

For all your PC gaming needs, use this website:
https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Silent_Hill_2:_Director%27s_Cut#Silent_Hill_2_Fog_Fix
>>
>>387645647
Also use these values, to make similar to PS2 version:
[FOG]

fog_custom_on = 1 // 0 - Off; 1 - On;

fog_transparency_layer1 = 160 // original value 128;
fog_transparency_layer2 = 160 // original value 128;

fog_layer1_x1 = 0.750 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_x2 = 0.750 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_y1 = 0.750 // original value 0.125;
fog_layer1_y2 = 0.750 // original value 0.125;

fog_layer2_density_mult = 1.5 // original value 1.0;
fog_layer2_density_add = 100.0 // original value 0.0;

fog_layer2_complexity = 0.066406 // original value 0.048828;

It was different from the first 3 in a lot of ways.
>No flashlight
>Radio is basically a redlight for the apartment's haunted level
>A much more lengthy escort session than what was seen in SH2
>The story taking the cult to somewhat cartoonish levels of villainy

That, and I think people were put off by how it appeared both it and RE4 were going for "something new and refreshing" for their fourth entries. Granted, They were scarcely similar in what they changed, but they were different enough from their respective predecessors all the same that it's only reasonable to see people not liking what both games were trying out. Still, The Room was pretty fun for what it was, and a much more preferable swan song compared to the crap we got after.

How so? We rarely saw true spirits within the series beforehand. Lisa was a figment created by Alessa, the ghosts Maria met were never seen so who knows if they even had any kind of "form" to speak of, and whatever pushed Heather in the tracks or chased her in the haunted house are pretty much never going to explained.

Second half gets even better. I don't get why there is this meme where it is regarded as one of the worst things in gaming to go back through a level. As long as it is done well and not overused I see no issue with this.
>>
>>387647903
While The Room manages to make the backtracking somewhat refreshing because of the altered worlds, part of the issue was that for some, those levels weren't all that engaging the first time around.

>>
>>387648112
I liked them. I mean I haven't played the game in awhile but I did play it at least a few times so I remember much of how they were. I remember the prison level being some of the best shit I've seen in a SH game. It even had some alternate paths to go through. Plus the room gave for some pretty cool horror moments.
>>
>>387648678
He's a bigger SH fan than you, you know.
>>
>>387648764
No, he isn't.
>>
>>387647903
the game turns into absolute tedium at that point, and while I don't inherently dislike backtracking it's absolutely frustrating with SH4's systems, especially the unkillable enemies
>>
>>387648412
Still better than Shitcumming, Pisspour, and Shatturd Cummies
>>
>>387649328
>not Pisspoor
>>
>>387649328
Relative to those games anything can be a masterpiece
>>
>>387649224
Maybe if you are awful at video games I can see it being tedious but it was a pretty intense game in the second half to me.
>>
>>387647903
>>387648112
In the original Silent Hill games the player also had to replay the levels except the they were all hellish and with metal grating everywhere and stuff. The problem with SH4 is that the levels are just so boring and there is nothing interesting in them, it's just corridors or open ended areas with trees and that's it, there are no blocked paths that make the level look bigger than it really is, no missing floors that lead into the abyss. The original games had highly detailed environments and every corner had different imagery, it was filled with weird things that made the player think "what the hell happened here?" all the time.

For example, this shack alone(>>387648172) is more interesting than the entire forest level of SH4 and they're supposedly located in the same area.
>>
>>387649639
Not to mention the SH1 levels were fairly short in both halves, but formed a nice and lengthy experience when going through both "sides" of them. The problem with the Room's dark worlds is that there's not much difference since you're already in a twisted version of the places, with the retreads being just "even more so" than before.

Nah, the second half of SH4 is like a really shitty attempt to replicate the kind of tension that made Resident Evil so popular but without any of the nuance of those games. The bulk of Silent Hill's horror doesn't even come from its design, rather its atmosphere, but SH4 suddenly decides halfway through that it's going to force you to carefully manage your inventory and search for obscure items to help seal away unstoppable enemies. This comes at the cost of variety, since you're exploring the same levels that you've already investigated and built a tolerance to, and their design doesn't do a good job of accommodating the new gameplay style in the same way that RE's interconnected spaces do. The result is a bland retread through stages that aren't scary anymore, trying to protect eileen from annoying, unkillable enemies and just hoping that the whole ordeal can end as soon as possible. The final area isn't even a good payoff for all that labor, either. Just a total waste of potential.

>>387651873
They do change, it's just that the changes are some more creepy shit, which some of them were already present the first go around. It lacks the severity of change seen in the first 3 games where the changes were like night and day.

The camera was mostly fine in the games. The camera in DMC sucked because platforming with bad camera is never a good mix. Silent Hill you just run and do combat. There isn't even any evade buttons besides simply moving.
>>

There would be no one else there to symbolize my loneliness.

>>387658781
No the camera sucks in DMC because it doesn't use tank controls. Tanks controls is perfect for games with a fixed camera that likes to keep changing because up is always forward no matter where your character is facing.

>>Final setpiece is a blatant Evangelion ripoff

Now I don't hate the game, but...

Sort of yeah. It definitely feels the most different up to the point it was released. Some of the monster designs were great though.

>Inventory system that limits how much you can carry, but then pushes you to constantly backtrack to the room for items needed for puzzles
>Large groups of enemies that are often times fast, meaning combat can sometimes turn into a cluster fuck of cheap hits
>Large, somewhat uninteresting areas to explore that neither nail the atmosphere of the open town of Silent Hill nor the tight cohesion of smaller puzzle areas
>Fantastic enemy designs ruined by public domain sound effects, such as dogs having a jaguar roar and the walking zombie things letting out a generic cartoonish burp sound
>Enemy types early on that are basically invincible, go through shit, chase constantly, and hurt you just by being near
>Reused environments alongside an escort mission of sorts, which isn't as bad as some people make it out to be, but is still lazy and a poor design choice
>Motherfucking enemy wheelchairs that hit you, spin around, pop a wheelie, then keep rolling on

The game had an amazing atmosphere, especially with the room idea, and the music/designs were right up there with other Silent Hill games. Everything to do with playing the game though feels like an outright downgrade or just plain breaks any theme/immersion they tried to get going. I know people hate hearing shit like this, but if it was called anything else, like just "The Room", it would've been way better. But because it's labeled as SH4, it's difficult to not make comparisons to past entries.

Good music, atmosphere, and for the most part enemies. It is a game that tries to be Silent Hill 2 as much as possible. If you liked SH2 you will most likely enjoy this to some extent. It's not the best game, but it's decent. It doesn't live up to Silent Hill tier standards. I enjoyed it, but still acknowledge it's flaws.

Don't play Downpour though, I can't say anything positive about that game besides maybe a few shortly-lived sections.
>>
>>387668967
Downpour was probably my favourite silent hill game in recent years.

Amazing how divided people can be on it.
>>
>>387640052

Because it was the first 8/10 Silent Hill game. Nowadays its more appreciated because Homecoming, Downpour and that godawful Vita Arpg exists.

>>387644851

>The thing is that the ghosts go completely against everything Silent Hill was about.

Not really, visually they followed the same kind of design Memory of Alessa did in SH3, even when they were obviously inspired by the victims in the movie The Cell where you go inside a murderers head.
>>
>>387663186

Its shit, been playing the franchise since the first one came out and Homecoming was so fucking bad and missed the whole point of the games so hard that it made me angry. Its the second worst game in the franchise, while Downpour is third worst.
>>

Have you seen what Konami is currently doing with Metal Gear Solid? No, just let it remain dead until the IP switches owners or Kotaku has its headquarters murdered and replaced with more skilled people.

The kind of development environment, the talent and the love they put on those games just can't be replicated nowadays.
