Has nothing in common with the old games, except that in both games theres a thief and his name is garrett. Thats it.

They made so many terrible decisions during the development, what the hell. My fav so far was when some dev explained how in the end of all levels, garrett had to flee from the place in action packed sequences. Then somebody asked "how is he a masterthief when he fucks up everytime and has to flee?"

After that moment, they changed a lot of endings

>animations
i really wouldnt consider this a negative

the rest are valid complaints, but a natural development given how almost every publisher wants even the biggest idiots to play their game

i still enjoyed the gameplay and there were a bunch of points where i had to use my brain.

no doubt the first one is better (haven't played it) but to call the new one indefensible is pushing it too far. It was still a decent game

No it severely slows down gameplay for no reason whatsoever, in the past games when I see something I click a button and that's all there is I can immediately move around afterwards but in Thi4f when there are multiple things I want to loot I have to watch a two to three second animation each time. Sure it's a minor problem compared to the other faults but it's not something that should exist to begin with.
>>
>>387641638
there is no objective negative to this though. I can't remember if it bothered me or not, but the developers obviously added these animations to increase immersion and i am 95% sure that the reason why the first game didnt have those was technical/budget limitations

I always forget it exists then some fag has to bring it up. It's an insult to the franchise. Thief should've just stayed dead after Deadly Shadows. A 3rd person Thief game just doesn't work well at all. If there ever is another installment, I at least hope it's 1st person.

>but the developers obviously added these animations to increase immersion
I'm sure that's the reasoning behind it but it makes no sense because there's nothing immersive about taking an unnecessarily long time to pick up individual items, since you'd want to to that as quickly as possible in case a guard shows up.
My counterpoint to this not being in the old games for technical and budget reasons is that Dishonored didn't do it either, and yet I remember some interview about getting the feel of picking something up without animations just right, so it was a conscious choice.
>>
>>387639563
4chan being contrarian is one of its good qualities. The important part though, is to make thought out arguments and not just 'X is shit, Y is the best'. The real problem are the constant circle-jerks propagated by nu-anons.
>>
>>387643609
well, IRL you actually have to move your hand, grab a thing and move it into your pocket if you want to take it. That is what immersion is about.

For gameplay purposes in regards to urgency, i agree though. They should have made the animations more dynamic and not restrict any movement when grabbing stuff

>>387640285
All I remember was guards talking about cock rings and a lot of EH going on.
>>
>>387644479
Does EH stand for anything or was it just everyone's reaction to the game?
>>
>>387644291
>That is what immersion is about
I don't know, all the games which I find most immersive (old Thief, System Shock, STALKER, games like that) don't have animations like that. Crysis handled it well at least, but I wasn't really into that game. I think it's more important that the game's controls don't draw attention to themselves, and first person animations for interactions open up a lot of chances for that to happen.

>>387644712
Garrett had only one combat grunt, which he'd make every time he used his blackjack. And there's nothing more to combat than button mashing so you get EH EH EH EH EH EH.

>>
>>387645971
reasonable argument, i guess that's a challenge with making a game immersive.

on a semi-related note, i get extremely irritated with newer 3rd person games animations when walking/running just a bit. all the elaborate animations that try to make the walking more natural get wonky af when you stutter step or change directions fast. The assassins creed games are a big perpetrator.
>>
>>387642473
Thief 3 was built from the ground up to be played in 3rd person, that's why the controls are so awkward if 1st person.
>>
I remember the belt memes.

>>
>>387639481

Really? Thief was the only stealth game (other than MGS4, where stealth was completely optional) that I actually enjoyed. Try harder.
>>
>>387646667
What really boils my knickers is when games force you to walk while a character talks at you. Nothing takes me out of a game more than arbitrarily changing controls like that. I assume it's so you don't go wild and make the sequence look ridiculous, but I find that more reasonable than the game forcing you to behave. If the player's into the game, they'll behave on their own.
>>
>>387647635
Those are both the worst games in their respective series so I'd recommend checking out any of the other games from those series.
>>
>>387647635

Yeah about that... Thief is actually fucking awful. If you've never played the originals it might not seem THAT bad, but if you have played them it's an absolute disgrace.

How can a game from 2014 be inferior in every single way (save for graphics) to a game from 1998...?

Thief itself was the absolute revolution for sound design in the industry which is the most infuriating part. So much of the character of the first two is built on its sound and the ways that you interact with it. Spooky moans? Guard boots on marble? Your own footsteps on different surfaces? Every time I think about NuThief I get more and more angry.

Fuck me, time to reinstall. It's the little things that get you and never let you go with Thief and they had no fucking clue what they were doing with the new one, not even a fucking wisp of understanding of what made it so good. Even Deadly Shadows tried, though it fell flat.

It's awful that years later I'm just happy Stephen Russell didn't have anything to do with it.

It's awful playing stealth games these days with all sorts of HUD indicators for alertness and shit when Thief managed all that shit with well chosen sound effects.

>not even a fucking wisp of understanding of what made it so good.
One of the interviews with one of the developers said how a lot of its mechanics like limited maps and what not were outdated and gamers now a days don't won't that.

There are only two Thief games as far as I'm concerned, it's a shame that LGS went under because in their short time they made some god tier games. Arkane have carried the torch and the Dishonored games are infinitely better than nu-Thief but still not quite the same level as TDP or TMA.
>>
>>387650349

The HUD's another example of where NuThief continually fucked up too. You know instinctively what kind of light levels are going to be risky as fuck or places of refuge because the light meter is clear and consistent and the atmospheric lighting is also consistent. The darkness at the edge of your screen that you get in Thaaf? Alright, you're now making me look to the edges of the screen to try and gauge what your semi-dark environments consider to be perfect shadow, there's not even any spooky factor to the game anymore.

>>387650638

Yeah, I watched all of the interviews they gave in the lead-up. I was cautiously optimistic in the same kind of "well, it won't be as good as the others but perhaps it's got some kind of creative heart". And then the videos with the XP indications broke. And then the bitching about rope arrows. And then the swoop. I will never stop being mad.

There's an easy way to find out:
Did you play the first two Thief games?
Did you enjoy it?
If you answered yes to both questions, then no, don't play it.
If you answered no to the first question, go play Thief 1 and 2.
If you answered yes to the first question but no to the second question, your taste is absolutely terrible and I couldn't care less about what shit games you play

It's an objective waste of your time, unless you want to experience what it's like to fail to connect with any possible target audience on the planet. Good as a case study, but that's about it.
>>
>>387652817

If you have a PC you can get Thief: the Dark Project or Thief 2 for peanuts on steam or GOG.

The graphics don't hold up (it's late 90s early 3D) but the gameplay trumps every other stealth game since.

Play those first and then play Thief (the 2014 reboot).

All this bitching and moaning here about the game might make some sense.

They have extremely flawed design, and are catering to a niche crowd. Even oldschool types may not like it, despite all the innovations it had. Recommending it to console babies is the same as offering a cheese with mold to a kid who considers a bag of chips a delicacy.
