If you are interested in seeing homage and understanding the context of their appearance than Production order is helpful.

If you are looking to get yourself into the franchise then start at Mania and then let your curiosity take you onward.

If you wanna know what mania generally plays like; play Sonic 3 & Knuckles first. Mania's basically the same as that gameplay wise with one different ability for sonic (drop dash) added to the mix.

The others are good games, but S3&K is the closest approximation of what you're getting by far.

I think Mania's great presentation is instead a good way to encourage you to play other games in the series.
You'll be exposed to some top-tier level design, and from there you can compare what you do and don't like from the games you play afterwards.

Play the classics but you may as well drop 1 after Green Hill Zone. There's a reason nothing else from it ever really gets referenced.

Sonic 1 and 2 romhack, then CD on Steam, then Sonic 3 Complete romhack. Play those in that order and you're bound to have a good time as well as playing what I would say is the definitive version until 1 and 2 get proper console/PC releases.

Sonic mania rekindled my love for the franchise. 1 and 2 where part of my childhood but that's it. Played a bit of 3 and CD but never beat them. Planning to buy the classics again on steam when I'm done with mania

So for shits and giggles I installed the PS4 remote play app on my PC expecting it not to work because the only PS4 I've used is sitting in the office at my job halfway across town. But to my surprise it not only found the PS4, it was able to connect to it too with an acceptable amount of input delay. Now I can finally play Mania with my USB Saturn controller like god intended.
It's a pretty janky setup to be fair, but it's enough to tide me over until the 29th

I was thinking more in terms of how well it played; I know that "gotta go fast" was marketing more than the games themselves but Marble Zone's still an odd approach for a Sonic level (and Labyrinth Zone is a pain in the ass even for a water level).

I never encountered the glitch you mentioned, but kid me played Tails and always lost a life to that drop in Ice Cap Zone.

I was honestly expecting the Mirage Saloon 1ST boss to be a callback to the train from Sunset Park, but no. If a Mania 2 has Game Gear stages, that's going to be a gaurenteed stage, as I'm sure Taxman and Stealth know of the demand for it.

How is Mania speed-wise? I was replaying S3K earlier and one thing that annoys me is the slow acceleration.

Considering they're still good games I'd say yes. Don't be a "Mania is the only good sonic game" type like some people have been being lately. Especially since some level design is lifted straight from the old games and the only new core mechanic is the drop dash which isn't overly game changing.

I'd say Mania does give a lot of tweaks to level designs and use of gimmicks that helps level flow smoother, but I agree. 3&K and 2 still hold up fine.
