Dark Samus in Metroid Prime 3 is pretty average compared to the first two fights in Prime 2. Becomes borderline unplayable and unfun on Hyper Mode difficulty. Then, rather than anything cool, you just fight an Aurora Unit because it's trying to be Super Metroid. Dark Samus could have become Metroid Prime again or something cool, but no.

Both Castlevania Sorrow games have pretty bad final bosses too. Just random clusterfuck shit all over the screen. At least Chaos in Aria was justified in that it's the source of the castle's powers, but it's still not fun. Menace was just atrocious, to the point where evil Soma in Julius mode was a better final boss.

That's one of the best final bosses in gaming though, no joke. The first game had a silly joke ending rhythm game, Nier extrapolated an entire universe from the joke ending, and finally D3 completely remade it into something beautiful. It's difficult, thematically flavourful, long, and truly satisfying to beat. In a game filled with Intoners who battle through song, it only makes sense that the final boss is a rhythm game. It introduces several extra meta twists, such as the camera spasms, because the Flower comes from 'our' world and it's attacking you, the player, directly by attempting to make you ragequit. The music itself is amazing. And finally, it ends in Taro's first "happy" ending. What more could you ask for?

I absolutely adore the often overlooked fact that during credit shmup in ending E of Automata last big names are starting to shoot bullets in Flower's pattern.
This alone made already powerful End of YoRHa absolutely brilliant for me.

I actually think Saints row 4 did it the right way. Have the actual battle be a normal boss fight with normal health bars. Then when the boss reaches zero, use easy QTE's to pummel the final boss to death for maximum satisfaction.

There's literally nothing wrong with that if it's done well. The satisfaction of finally getting that HP whittled down and then getting retarded with some kind of kickass finisher to drive in just how hard you kicked the boss's ass feels great.
I feel like people give QTEs too much shit. They obviously shouldn't be used as filler, or to replace actual gameplay, but using a QTE as a sort of reward for skilled play is perfectly acceptable in my book.

I guess it depends on the story and pacing. Usually the game doesn't just end at the final boss, though there might be games that actually do. Many stories involve the main character becoming supremely powerful and saving the day in a sort of deus ex machina, and whether that fight is the last battle or if you actually defeated the boss in proper gameplay, and which battles you actually count... there are so many logistical problems

Like FF7 and BotW, for instance. Cloud takes out Sephiroth with omnislash, which is the last fight you have in the game, but was that really the last battle? Well, not really, it was a glorified cutscene. BotW's Beast Ganon isn't any different in this regard, since the insurmountable size of the enemy makes him pretty difficult to realistically fight in the way you've fought 99% of the enemies in the game

My entire point was it's incredibly difficult to balance the various attributes, and at a certain point you have to expect people are going to realize the challenge in BotW's ending wasn't dark beast but the fight right before it, and so on

Finding something to complain about is the easiest thing in the world to do. /v/ is literally life's easy mode

A boss is supposed to be a test that you've mastered the mechanics of the game that you've been taught up until that point.

2D Marios are platforming games. It's like people suddenly expecting Mario to whip out a sword and start slashing at him in a highly action-oriented way. In a sense, "the boss is really the whole level" is a much more appropriate approach to 2D Mario games, since that's what Mario is. It's getting from one size of the level to the other by jumping and avoiding things,

Again, this is why "easy" is important part. If the player presses the wrong button it shouldn't be a "fail". Nothing should happen. Same if they don't press anything. All the player should do is spam the action button to rip the bosses head off or something. Mistakes at this point shouldn't be punished at all, because the player has won the true battle of skill.

Basically an interactive cutscene with no bullshit.

The cool thing about this fight is there's this weird CQC countering mechanic going on if you try to use it on her, but the game doesn't tell you how to do it, that you can do it and the way the fight is largely stealth based means you don't really do it unless you run at her like a retard

A fight like the hand to hand fight with liquid on the metal gear would have been better for this imo

I like the design, even if I know what the hell he's supposed to be, but the actual fight is just running away in a big circle until he makes himself briefly vulnerable. Your biggest enemy in the fight is the camera suddenly turning, and it's a real shame considering the two fights before it are great.
