Serious question: Why is hotline miami so fucking overrated? It's not just on /v/. I played it when it came out and thought it was cool but it never even registered in my mind as possibly one of the greatest games of all time. Was it a slow year? I don't remember.

man I really liked Gravity Rush 1, which I bought after seeing E3 footage for 2

but I'm like 2 hours in and bored to tears. my favorite part of 1 was just collecting the gems and upgrading abilities. the combat wasn't so hot and the missions were all a bit simple

so far in 2, the missions are all still simple and the combat is just a little bit better, but there's no gems to collect anywhere

does it get any better? haven't gotten to any city yet, last thing I did was go down the mine again for a sidequest

If you are a fan of Immersive Sims (Dishonored, Bioshock, Thief 3, etc.) its arguably the best ever released. I am 100% serious, its just that fucking good. Top notch level design, top notch atmosphere, lots of fun systems to fuck around with, and good writing.

2 gets better in that regard as you go on. The opening is very restrictive and takes you from beat to beat without much breathing room but at a certain point it really opens up and you can fly around just doing whatever shit pleases you and faffing about with the side-missions and challenges - or hunting for the collectible civilians/trophies with the camera.

Personally I really, really loved it once I got over the initial slump. Fair warning though the ending is rushed as fuck and will not answer all your questions so if you are playing for the story don't expect it to end very well.

Yes, pirated it and did one playthrough and I'm about to play again with the copy I bought through the Steam sale. Gonna do a no alien neuromod playthrough this time.

If you go into it like a Doom type fps you're not gonna have fun. Many of my normie friends don't like it because it doesn't hold your hand and isn't something where you can spam gunfire. For me on the other hand, a game that doesn't hold your hand and makes you plan before combat is paradise to me.

One if the things I oddly enjoyed was the crafting and recycling. Crafting has the potential in most games to be time consuming and boring as fuck. The recyclers and fabricators are a great nod to previous crafting systems like System Shock.

I'll give you Raven but I thought Mantis, Octopus, and Mantis were all pretty damn good and the Ocelot fight was great as well despite its limited scope. Getting to finally use a Metal Gear like that was also fucking fantastic even if compared to actual mecha games (including ones Kojima made) its not very fleshed out.

Frankly I have no idea. I played the game and enjoyed it, but the lasting impression of the game was essentially "that was a nice little game", not "holy shit this is awesome GOTY everyone must play it" like /v/ reacted to it. I can only assume that Hotline Miami was a game that people played after endlessly playing stale AAA games, making the game seem better in comparison. Other than that I really don't know.
