this a million times. what a journey. what a fucking atmosphere. most 'horror games' these days are just cheap as shit jump scare compilations with no story or mechanics to back it up.
this made me feel genguinely eerie in a well realised way.
i get sad thinking that I'll never play a game like this again.

Just playing through it for the first time after having completed both DaS1 and 2 for few times. Probably not the best game in the series overall, but so far it has the best bosses.

des is probably the worst souls game. it's the one you don't really need to play except to just try it out because it's the first one.

I disagree. As far as the plot goes all the games pretty much tell you exactly what is going on and usually via unavoidable exposition dumps so it's not like there's any sort of effort required on the player's part to discover it. The vagueness is in the mostly inconsequential details, that "lore" that 1% of fans think is what makes the Souls games so good and 99% of fans could not give a fuck about. That shit is just as vague in Demon's Souls as it is in any of the other games, the difference is there's not a lot of it in Demon's Souls, and in all of the games none of it really matters.

Honestly I really liked the overall style of the games look the most out of the Souls series.

Obviously it's clunky compared to the rest of em but I preferred the armour design a lot. Plus I really liked the settings as well.

Then FS and Miyazaki began to repeat and polish everything also add a few things but the core game was DS.
DS2 was an experiment by the team and the engine and DS3 it's a goodbye.
BB was the evolution of DS.

I fully buy into the fact that DS1 is shit after S&O (AotA is good though). Nito and BoC are terrible (ie too easy) bosses, and the zone mini-bosses are just as bad, while the settings themselves aren't great. It's like they ran out of steam.

I think that two things tend to skew people's perception of the series - which game they played first, and what they did or didn't like about it. This doesn't mean people only like the first game they play, or that they'll always like it the most. But for everyone the first entry is special - Souls games don't really play quite like anything else, nothing else is quite like them, and they're all more similar to each other than they are to anything else. The first one is a revelation and it's an intensely subjective experience. Across multiple entries and playthroughs a player will tend to develop a bit of objectivity.

A lot of players first came in with Dark Souls I because it was the first multiplat. But Dark Souls I is actually the black sheep of the series. There's no real hubs anywhere, no sense of a home base, and the player is much more self-sufficient and independent than any other Souls protagonist right out of the box, and if the player makes certain investments the difference gets bigger. The Dark Souls II and III characters cannot level up, increase the capacity of their flasks, upgrade armor, upgrade weapons, or repair equipment without magic. All of those things require outside help located in specific spots in the game, whereas the PC in DS1 can do all of them at any bonfire. Bloodborne allows the player to do all of these things but they have to return to a central hub to do them. Intentional or not it fit the story of Dark Souls I (the player character becoming increasingly isolated as friendlies die off) and the theme of difficulty perfectly - true strength ultimately comes from within, you can't rely on anyone else in the clutch.
