Success got to their heads. They had all this massive player growth and just started giving absolutely no fucks about how the decisions they made would affect player retention. That's fine when you are the hot new thing everyone is checking out and then the heavyweight champion that even oblivious people have heard of and will download on a whim, but if the new player rate slows then not caring about player retention will start to hurt you.
I don't know Riot's numbers now for new players, not accounts, but players. I do know that the new player experience is fucking awful. It's just terrible.
When I started playing I could get out of the hell of blind pick at any level just by getting enough champs to normal draft. Now queue times are so long even into the lvl 20 range where the queues would have popped quickly before.
You don't really have other options playing against people because with low level ARAM you're fucking lucky to have even two other actual players to join the bots.
If you're insane and keep at it then when you do hit 30 and get games with people they're just dicks or infinitely more skilled than you and it's a shitty experience.
What went wrong is everything went right in terms of popularity and ever since then Riot has given no fucks about making new players want to stay or given any consideration to not driving away their older players.
