The whole series is just bland and boring as fuck.

I really tried to like it, but it's just a monotonous slog.

Online and the georama stuff was fun, the single player story is like every jrpg cliche rolled into one and when the game actually bothers to show your created character in cutscenes they just stand around dead silent and looking autistic

No, it's really generic and boring. I'm pretty sure the online servers are down too, so you can't even engage in the one interesting part of the game.

When you go in, it actually looks and feels pretty fun. Pretty environments, ffxii-type combat, a presumption of increased depth later on.

This is a clever ruse to get you invested. The rest of the game consists of ffxiii-tier corridor runs with much worse combat. The only good villian is killed halfway through the first game. You get to the end, start up the second, do one new area, and then spend the entire rest of the game going through the EXACT same areas as the first game, with no changes, in reverse order.

The sidequests in the game are the worst kind of "collect 10 bear asses and then run back and forth between two npcs for half an hour" and a number of endgame techniques are locked behind them. All the rest give jack fucking shit as reward.

You'll never be able to respec characters, because doing so was payed content. You'll never be able to play the post game dungeon, because it was balanced for online. You'll never be able to craft any weapons until far after they're useful, and none of the endgame weapons period, because the requirements are balanced for online.

Leonard is the most hilariously inept jrpg protagonist ever. His every action jeopardizes himself and his teammates, and in the second game jeopardizes the player's very ability to pass a certain boss battle due to his disappearing from his own game for half it's length. He then becomes, spoilers, the final boss in his own video game.

It is irredeemable trash.

Leonard disappears for half the game because he's having some weird sickness thing from overusing the white knight. This fucks you over because you end up in a situation where you have to fight some super powerful bosses without ANY knights with what is probably your b-team. If you have no magic specialists, you're FUCKED.

Then you get past that part, everyone levels up like 10 levels and you start to move past Leonard. You get to what's obviously an endgame dungeon, get to the also-hard boss fight, and just as you're about to win Leonard shows up and forces himself into the party.

At that moment in time, you're forced to use him (along with two other characters) when he's both equipped with shit from 10 hours ago and a good dozen levels underleveled. He's a big honking liability and will get you killed and you will hate him.

After that, you go to the final area to kill the final boss. Everyone who has a knight by that point knights up, you get a short fight, then the knights have a hyperressonance. Leonard goes "oh shit" and gets possessed by asspull guy from the past, is removed from the party, and is completely unplayable as you proceed to beat his useless ass in as the final boss.

He ends the game barely alive, still a kissless virgin that never managed to get anywhere with his weird kidnappedfu Cisna. He is the worst and I'm convinced Level-5 wanted to piss all over him because he's completely irrelevant for the later half of his own game.

The second game starts you at level 35.

You can technically reset your level for some extra ability points when you reach the max, which lets you respec avatar again, but you are NOT going to reach level max, or even close to it, without the online content. Essentially you only get one respec-able character, and he/she stops being so after game 1.

there are a few giza plains-type open-ish "islands connected by corridors" areas though I'll give you that one. Most dungeons are either corridors or infuriatingly huge.

Nope, at that point in the game leonard's in a coma so both caesar and moon-knight-girl get removed too to defend the kingdom off-screen. You don't get the option to get the avatar knight until after the past section, and it's bar none the hardest section of the game because of it.

That's just factually wrong though, every single character after they hit the level cap can rebirth, that sets them to level 35, resets all their spent skill points, and gives them bonus skill points to spend, and rebirth multiple times increases the amount of bonus skill points that you get up to the third rebirth
That's how you can get every single stat upgrade from every skill tree, max out a skill tree of your choice, and still have points left over

The hardest part of that is keeping Cyrus alive since it's a game over if he dies for some stupid reason but you can just throw some defense buffs on him or use the spear sets aoe defense buffs and taunt moves to keep him from getting hit

It's pretty fun. The combat is like FFXII but a lot more fun and interesting. The start of the first game is actually a little like it too (get wine, pick flowers, sneak into castle when it gets attacked, find powerful secret) which is funny. The dungeons and areas are alright if not really special, but the game at least looks fairly nice, but the second game obviously had pretty severe budget problems, because after a cool and expansive new area it just reuses the exact same areas as the first game until the end which has only a few other new places. The story is relatively cliche and doesn't do a whole lot overall but the characters are a bit more enjoyable than you'd expect. The second game fixed a lot of issues with the combat in the first (and they retroactively fixed it in the included version) which is nice but it still has a lot of missed potential and odd decisions, like I don't know why Level 5 didn't make it an ARPG like all their other games. If you can get it cheap then go for it but you could also get Dark Cloud 1, 2 or Rogue Galaxy which are all much better games from the same company, and cheap too on PS4's PS Store. Turning into knights and the combo system is really nice in this game though, and it's a shame it didn't do so well because 2 was a big improvement over 1 in many ways and it looked like it would only get better if they continued.

Yes although the online is gone now. Which was half the fun.
Only thing I can remember about the game is sky fortresses and master shake voicing a wizard.
