Unlike the other autists will make it out to be, it's not a bad game. Though it's very different from the rest of the Ace Combat games in gameplay. I'd suggest playing that first and enjoying the game, and than go to the real deal games and enjoy that more.

It's a shit AC game and a very underwhelming action game. No reason to play it other than morbid curiosity.

Why are 4,5 and 0 always recommended? What about 1,2,3?

By the way, if you go into a Ace Combat thread saying "I don't really understand why people hate this" without actually playing 4/5/0, you can go fuck yourself in all honesty.

For all the shot ACAH gets, it has the single best naval encounter in the franchise. The AA on the aircraft carriers will fuck you up.

4/5/0 is when the series really hit its stride in the eyes of most people. There's nothing wrong with 1 and 2, and 3 would have been really good but they cut a huge amount of content out of the international versions and we only got a full translation of it within the last year. The PS2 trilogy just has it all, story, presentation, music, gameplay, framing/lore, characters, etc.

Alright, I'll grab a PS2. Planned on to anyway since I'll be starting the Yakuza series too and 2 is only on the PS2 (don't understand Japanese for PS3 HD).

4, 5 and 0 are the "trilogy", they take place in the same setting, most people started with them and are overall great games. Dunno about 1, 2 has a pretty good remake on the 3DS that you can also play (that bamco labeled with the Assault Horizon name for whatever stupid reason), 3 was apparently butchered in localization but a translation patch for the JP version was released recently
