The less weight percentage you're carrying the faster you move, so raising Strength helps a lot. Along with raising Speed, speed enhancing potions and items, and Feather effects (but having enchanted items that give extra Strength is better than just Feather). I've played Morrowind a couple times before and recently was trying to get into it again, but wasn't having that much fun. I basically remade my heavy armored knight into a berserker and I'm having a lot more fun with it. I just swapped out heavy armor for unarmored and used a spear instead of blunt for the extra range, it's actually working pretty well so far and I'm really enjoying the extra speed. Just gonna enchant some stuff later with unarmored to give a bit of a boost to armor rating when I get the chance.

You can put robes and stuff over your armor, so you have aditional enchant slots.

I made a heavy armor altmer mage once and it was pretty good. It made touch spells easier to do since I had some defense, so my spells were way more powerful. Only problem was the inherent cap to damage prevention by armor so I wound up enchanting it to hell and back anyway so it was more for show than actually useful since I had Sanctuary 100 and Reflect on it.

Everyone uses medium because the ordinator armor looks the best and is easy to get at the beginning.

Heavy Armor is probably the worst type in MW, the full daedric set is so heavy you can hardly take any loot with you.

When I was sperging on this game really hard back in the day p much all my builds were light armor based, glass is the best. But killing things before they hurt you is even better.

The three armour classes has their pros and cons, and definitely are more or less effective depending on how far you're in the game, but overall they're balanced if you take artifacts and enchanting into account. If you go light armour just to max your raw defense value from your standard pieces at endgame, you're a brainlet who doesn't know how to play.
